Thread was intended to contrast to the 'Most Hated Faction' one at a minimum, since the forum always seems to be a hive of negativity. Was also a good way to canvas Dakka and let everybody see what people lean towards as their favorite faction.
I started playing Space Hulk back with SH 1st edition, way way way before I knew much about Warhammer/40k. The Blood Angels will always be my favorite.

It was a joke. At this point I thought it would be pretty obvious my favourite faction is Tau to the point saying it would be redundant given the fact I can be pretty infamous in some circles here.
Word Bearers - imho their aesthetics and overall theme are just the best of all of the human factions, probably only the Black Templars come close and I don't care for them way as much.
Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!
Vanilla Space Marines, there's so much variaty, you can pick from a number of chapters that already exist, many with storied back stories etc (including some sucessor chapters with histories as rich as the 1st founders) or do your own. there's just so much varity, and so many differant colour options.
Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
Orks. Out of all the cosmic horrors in the 40k-verse, the Orks are the purest. They don't scheme, they don't hate, they live purely to fight. Who's in charge? Woteverz da biggest. Not like 'umies an' der fancy 'ats and gubbinz.

Orks of course, I love most of the actual models but converting and scratch building is my passion, so greenskins are my favorite faction since 3rd edition.
Then I do love dark eldar and space wolves, but orks are number ones.
As an old Eldar player, I'm into Craftworlds, Harlies, and Ynnari.
I've unshelved them when the 8th ed. came out.
At the same time, I've shelved my Necrons (which I played in the 6th and 7th ed.) for obvious reasons.

Favourite GW Imperial Guard is Steel Legion. And (old) Storm Troopers. Favourite SM Chapter is Black Templars. Favourite First Founding is Imperial Fists. Favourite Chaos Legion is Iron Warriors. Favourite Chaos God is Slaanesh. Favourite xeno is (old) Tau Empire. In terms of model range/quality I'd say Dark Eldar are among the best miniatures they've ever put out, even though I've never been grabbed by them fluff-wise. In terms of painting/converting, when done really well, Orks have one of the best looking armies on the tabletop - the messy, dirty, scrappy look is easy to learn but very hard to truly master.
Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)
Chaos Space Marines, because there's so many flavours of bad guys in their ranks. Chaos can be anywhere from the raving madmen (Khorne), to malevolent plotters and planners (Black Legion), to tragic heroes turned villains (Thousand Sons), to villains you're not sure are villains (Cypher). They can be any army you want thematically, and now in 8th edition they have a wealth of options for how you want to play your games. You can do a firebase, or you can do close combat, or anything inbetween. There are only a few options missing that keeps them from being just about anything on the tabletop too, but that's forgivable.

Sisters! With faith and fire, we cleanse his foes!
As I've said, we have by far the prettiest models, and capture perfectly most of what I love most about the universe.
Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Yeah but they've got no spikes.

My vote is for Iron Hands, obviously. However, I will not be selecting the SM choice as I am being lumped in with the despised UM. IH are NOT wannabe UM. I know, I am being salty again.
Twinkle, Twinkle little star.
I ran over your Wave Serpents with my car.

I know right? IH are definitely a head above the rest of the SM chapters.

Chaos, but I feel putting tsons and dguard into separate options doesn't feel right. They are still chaos marines.
Chaos because of all the different options, thanks to the different gods with different focuses, you should be able to build what ever you want from a chaos army.
