Past editions have varied quite a bit on how they have handled wound allocation (i.e. 5th edition allocation dice evenly across models, 6th edition closest model first, 3rd edition majorities, etc.).

Anyway, 8th seems a little odd and unclear. The target units owner can allocate wounds to any model within the target unit, and then rolls saving throws. But this seems bit open to abuse depending on whether you fast roll or roll dice one at a time when there are mixed armor saves involved in a unit. E.G., if I have a wolf guard terminator (2 wounds, 2+ armor save), I can keep allocating wounds one at a time to the terminator's better armor save (and if in cover against AP -1 weapons it stays at 2+) and absorb a lot more wounds than I otherwise might. Is this international and working as intended?

Yes, this is intentional. It's not abuse, because if you fail the save on the better armoured model, you either lost that model, or it's wounded and now EVERY SINGLE WOUND must be allocated to it first. It's not unclear, and it's only "odd" in that it differs from other editions. Just because you personally don't like it doesn't make it unclear.

In your example, yes, you can allocate the harder hitting wounds to the Wolf Guard Terminator Pack Leader, but the instant it suffers a wound, every single wound that unit takes has to be tanked by him, from Plasma Cannon shots to Lasgun shots, and then weight of fire will drag him down and then start killing your other dudes.

Curiously, what units have mixed armor saves? With the loss if independent characters, I don't know of any units with mixed armor saves.

At any rate, like bacon said, if there are units with mixed armor saves, you take saves on whoever you want, but once they are wounded, you MUST continue to allocate wounds to that wounded model first.

Any Space Wolf unit with a Terminator Pack Leader, Deathwatch Kill Teams (Which even has a special rule to deal with the multiple toughnesses) and Black Templar Crusader Squads are the ones off the top of my head. I am sure the filthy xenos abominations must have at least one example somewhere.

BaconCatBug is right, it`s clear how to allocate.

Using one model to safe the others brings the risk of wounding it.
Your enemy can use that afterwards and for example shoot with a high AP weapon that now must be allocated to the modell that allready lost wounds.
So it has it`s pro`s and con`s

Makes the games faster - that 5th edition rules were good for my nobs but that wound allocating was a pain in the ass.

Sounds good - I don't have a preference one way or another how it works, I was just curious to get it clarified.

Thanks!

Craftworld Eldar...sorry, I mean Asuryani Guardian Defenders with Weapon Platform.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
