Hey Dakka,

A mate of mine has a conscript spam army. Classic sort of net-deck, cheesy list. Stupid amounts of bodies, lots of dice with some heavy weapons in there for punch. We mainly play amongst ourselves and unsurprisingly the big fish has outgrown his small pond. He wants a new challenge, so he's going to the weekend tournaments at the local GW store.

I'm not familiar with the culture or meta there, but should he go? On one hand it's a pretty annoying, unfun list. On the other hand there may be tons of similar lists there. We're in Sydney.

On another note, is anyone around to furiously kick his ass?

I can't speak for your store, but mine has a few other "good" players and a stack of casual and/or medicore players. I've played at 2 different stores [In the states, can't speak for Australia] and it's about the same at both.

I don't really have a problem with people using netlists. Most of the people playing IG Conscript spam I've met don't actually understand what precisely is making artillery lines and such good in the first place, and the people who do are fun to play against and didn't need the internet's help to come up with it anyway.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

If it's genuinely un-fun for you to play against, and you don't have a counterplay list, just don't play against it.

Don't get petty about it, just say "Hey man, I'm kind of bored playing against Conscript hoard, sorry."

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a competitive player. It will be good for him to be exposed to tournament lists, and also have to bring his list in a take-all-comers scenario, which has more variety than your local meta.

As far as net lists go, it's a copycat kind of game. I see a lot of people (in real life, not the internet) liquidating their Eldar collections from 7th and buying Tau or AM. Competitive players will field competitive lists. I guess you could argue that all of these people came to the conclusion that these factions are badass totally on their own, but come on...

yeah, honestly conscript spam REAAALLY isn't something you need the internet to explain. it's pretty obvious. I'm faaar from an expert but I spotted that synergy almost immediatly.

especially as he could easily run his conscripts as standard guardsmen without too many issues.

I don't see why he shouldn't go, might be a fun time for him to go to a competition event. Sure he might not fit the meta but its a competitive event he's attending he can make his own mind up on how much research he does before attending or if he just takes an army that works for him now and tries it out. No harm either way

Also don't forget that "net decks" don't really exist as such; furthermore even if they've copied a good list from someone else its still got to be played right to actually work.

As for during your local games there's no harm in saying "Hey how's about we change things up and try different lists to our normal" or "hey your army keeps thrashing mine way too easily; want to try something different and give yourself more of a challenge" or anything to that kind of effect. No need to make it a point of contention.

I actually feel sorry for him. In MTG i've seen people flock to the most popular net-decks and think they can go to the Grand Tournament with them, only to have their asses handed to them at the local FNM because while they understand how the deck works, they have no clue about it's weaknesses or how to mitigate them.

Competitive play is a completely different beast than your beer and pretzel casual games. If he's counting on just his list to get him by, he's gonna be in for a rude awakening.

What part of Sydney? This is important, because the gaming scene in Sydney is more fractious nowadays than it was when I lived there and played 40k.
Back in those days, there were regional clubs (Western subs had WSGS, North had the Crusaders, etc) and gaming stores (let alone GW ones) weren't as common - so the club thing was a way to get to meet other gamers. Only two GW stores had decent tables (town hall battle bunker was one). I lived in Rockdale, but travelled to Artarmon and Blacktown on different weekends to get games (basically an hour or so each direction).

Now, there are more gaming stores and more non-GW stores, too, so the scene broke up into little cliques clustered around their local stores and what part of sydney you live in and how far you are willing to travel means a lot more. You're going to get people with unfun lists at flgs or gw stores, though.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Is it all painted, most GW stores want only painted armies in tournies.

Just be ready to help him pack up and move figures from table to table.

Cheers for the replies guys! We stepped up our game locally and adjusted as advised. Got some more dakka into my blood angels list, and the rest of the group's adjusting as well so he's pretty happy. He went in last week, played a few rounds and as mentioned, the guys were really quite surprisingly competitive. He came up a direct counter list apparently, which gave him a good run for his money.

Thanks again for the feedback, took most of it onboard and we're all better for it.

Also, apologies for explaining conscript spam, it was pretty new to me at the time
