I just picked up the new CSM dex a few days ago and have noticed something I find rather interesting. First, the codex contains troop-level daemons (except Nurglings). This is fine as everything shares the Chaos faction keyword. This brings me to my first question: Despite being in different codices, once Chaos Daemons drops, will it still be possible to have a battle-forged army composed of both daemons and CSM units? As long as the daemons still have the Chaos keyword, is there anything preventing it and still being battle-forged? Is there anything preventing me from doing this now with daemons in the Chaos index?

This leads to the second point: While the answer to the first question might be yes, the codex takes a clear action to prevent things from getting silly, as it names a "Chaos Space Marine" detachment as one only containing legion faction keywords, and a "CSM detachment" has its own abilities like faction ObSec and Legion Traits. This leads to my second question: If I utilize daemons from the CSM codex (ie a unit of Daemonettes), who do not have legion keywords, but do not deploy them (ie set them aside for summoning via Daemonic Ritual) does this cause me to lose my Legion Trait? Also, do summoned units take up a ForceOrg slot? As in, can I take a unit of Bloodletters to be summoned and count them as one of my troops choices?

If yes to losing legion trait while taking summoned daemons, is there ever any point to taking daemons for summoning? One or two deep striking units does not at all seem like it would be worth giving up even the lowliest of legion traits.

1. Your army is battleforged if composed entirely of detachments with one common keyword between all detachments. CHAOS is fine to do this.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
2. To qualify as a Chaos Space Marine detachment, everything in the detachment must have the Legion keyword (not counting thousand sons and death guard). So no daemons.
You don't appear to understand how summoning works. You reserve points , not units. You use the points in game to get units, which can be anything. This has no effect on detachments.
So summoning will not cause you to lose anything, but summoned units cannot count towards any detachment slot.

Interesting. Still seems a bit odd to put those daemon units in the codex since there's really no reason to ever take them, and nothing about Daemonic Ritual forces you to summon only those units. Maybe they won't give all daemons that ability in their codex.

They are only there so you can make use of the summoning ability (word bearers get a bonus) without having to buy the index.

I wouldn't quite say no reason to ever take them, but it's pretty niche. Tactical diversity can be worth the inconvenience sometimes.
