My local GW had it's store anniversary recently, so I got myself one of the promotional Primaris Space Marine Captains ( Birthday Battle Brother)
While I wait for the model to arrive, I thought I'd make a list and see how to fit him in with the rest of my army. But, no dice - according to the brand new Space Marine codex, Primaris Captains have no equipment options for power fists, or plasma pistols. What gives?
It seems... odd. Am I crazy?
Assuming that there will be a rules insert coming in the box, it looks to me like we're going to have two separate unit entries for the same unit, with different equipment options. Or will the rules insert in the box be an updated version of the Primaris Captain unit entry that supercedes the codex entry?

There was images of the insert.

From the page you linked to...
Using him in your games is easy too, as full rules are included with the model.

I really love that model. It reminds me a lot of the early 90s captain model (no coincidence I am sure).

Waitaminute, didn't they JUST remade the older captain? I think his name was Captain Centos.

It's quite a looker, the model is great.
I knew it was going to come with rules in the box - my confusion was how those rules would compare or sync up with the codex rules for Primaris Captains. I was hoping someone had seen them already and could offer insight. It just seems odd to me that there would be two different unit entries.

It is indeed weird, but that's how it is. You can use either datasheet for the Captain. IMHO, the limited edition loadout is easily better than either of the codex options.

The way I intend to run it at the moment is just take the base cost of the Primaris captain and pay the points for the fist and plasma pistol. Its easy, very agreeable and I dont see anyone having problems with it.

depends really. I think the standard loadout might be better for a "gunline" support captain

Well, if you never end up in the melee then maybe. But that one extra bolt shot from the captain is not gonna tip the balance of the battle, but the power fist can have a huge impact. Besides, even though you would not intend your gunline to end up in melee, the enemy may have other ideas. The fist captain can be a good deterrent. Whoa, looks great. Marines look so much better when they're not blue. IF colours look really striking, I think they should be GWs posterboy marines.

Yellow is so much harder to paint. It makes a lot of sense to have posterboys that an average player has a passing chance at painting up.
That captain is marvelous, though.

Rules for models from here on will no longer be constrained to a Codex or FAQ. You'll find them as a PDF on the GW Website and as a paper insert with the models themselves.
Much like Age of Sigmar, for some factions, it's impossible to find all the rules for the army in a book. GW really drives you to download their army app WH Age of Sigmar.
There is a distinct possibility that in the near future, you'll be playing a game against models you've never seen the rules for.

Can we agree though, that the digital versions should be amended to have the new load-out as a standard gear option for the primaris Captain? They really need to try and consolidate all information as they go along as much as possible.

Thanks for the kind words on the paint job, appreciated! As far as yellow goes, well, if you have an airbrush it becomes a lot easier, to be honest.
The loadout is brutal, he becomes pretty threatening in CC, especially if he's hanging out with his Lt sidekick. Going forward, GW should really be looking at a living codex system imo, as you said Purifier.

My understanding is that the Codexes will have the rules for all the models and units currently freely available at tht etime the book is published. That's why this captain, the Imperial Space Marine, etc, aren't in it. You can't buy them any more (well, until all GW shops have had their anniversary in the 365 days since the captain was first available).
Mind you, I (and most people I pay) have always played against models we don't have the rules for. It's worked for the last 20 years, so I'm not upset by the idea.
