So......can we start mixing detachments of different chapters to utilize the strengths of each chapter? Any advice on which united would go where if this is a good idea?

My understanding is you can use different chapters in different detachments. I could be wrong, as I haven't tried it, but maybe a Raven Guard assault contingent and gunline support with Ultramarine midfield support could be competitive. I really don't know. Not sure it would be worth mixing it up.

Well here is answer :

Yes you can mix like that , but there are some drawbacks . Captains/Chaplains won't buff SM from other chapter. Also some psychic powers/stratagems may not work on all your forces if you are using specific for said chapter.

But yeah as it is , SADLY - for all armies it's not big deal to lose chapter/legion trait even mixing within detachment.

Seems like flexibility with units is most of the time worth more than Chapter/Legion traits. Though not always.

Thanks to the flexibility of the detachments, you can do this pretty easily.

Take an Ultramarines Battalion of Tacticals, a Raven Guard or White Scars Outrider Detachment, and an Iron Hands or Salamander Spearhead Detachment. The big thing to be careful of is to remember which squad has which chapter tactic, and to pair those units up with an HQ that buffs them the best while remaining inexpensive enough to allow for other detachments to take what they need.

Ah forgot biggest drawback , your army will look like gakky rainbow if you follow this route .

I like coherence - even if it costs me some combat value.

Do they have a CT that lets them pass meaningless resolutions, with no enforcement mechanism?

I've been toying with a raptors detachment with lias and 3 sternguard units or something + a IF or RG firebase where i spend 3 CP to get a chapter master for generally army wide rerolls to hit.

I haven't written it all out yet but i feel like the idea has promise.
