So a Ghostkeel can get a -2 to hit at 12'' aura on itself.
When this happens, is it even possible for a BS5 unit to hit it? Even if they roll a 6 the -2 to hit makes it a 4 which misses right?

From what I've seen thus far, you are correct. Modifiers can cause situations where "you need a 7+ to hit," and "your plasmas are now blowing up on 2s and 3s, not just 1s," etc.
Furthermore, while 1s are auto-fails for most rolls besides morale (rolling a 1 even though your Terminator in cover has a 0+ save still causes a wound), 6s do not count as auto-success.

Yep this is true in a number of situations. I'd apologize to the Orks, but they know their guns aren't hitting anyway

This had me confused, since I read BS5 as hitting on 2+, while the OP meant BS5+ =)

sadly this is true, gw should have said a 6 to hit ot wound always succeeds. Now its still need how gw claims, that everything can hit everything

GW has never once claimed that everything can hit everything, just that all attacks are capable of woudning everything, which is completely true with the current to wound chart.

It'll be at least another year before this stops confusing me.

Well, the main confusion comes from a model not having a BS5 in this game...they have a BS5+. People are lazy and don't actually type it though.

A roll of 1 for morale does not equal an automatic pass on the morale test.
