Ahem.
I set very unrealistic expectations for 8e. The resurrection of Papa Smurf and the idea of Primaris Marines were just to much for me. I swore that I would only buy an 8e rulebook if chaos marines got a justly deserved update to their model range, special characters included. Of course none of this happened. Despite the lack of rumors I got my hopes up anyway. There is so much wrong with the chaos army, concept wise and models, that I could not justify spending any more money on 40K. I have quite a lot of the plastic chaos marines which I find totally unsuited for my beloved Alpha Legion. I will not bore anyone with anymore criticisms of the basic chaos marine kit. There is plenty of that on Warseer from years back. But now, I have seen the light. Or rather the darkness.
I was so bitter and salty about the direction of 8e but I still want to use my models. Then it struck me, what about Malal?
The renegade chaos god of anarchy and self loathing and revenge. It is perfect. I can have my revenge on the imperium and the forces of chaos. The fluff is great and I love the two toned color scheme.
I have now been inspired to pull out all the models and begin sorting them out and I ordered an 8e rulebook off ebay. I will have my revenge if Malal wills it!

In all seriousness, I am going to jump back in soon and play a few games, the first I've played since 5e. I will run a force based off a company from the sons of malice. I am totally ignorant of the workings of 8e but I have the chaos codex at least. I would appreciate any advice on units that I have already, or any key units I should pick up. This is what I got:

-20 chaos marines with some options
-5 havoks-assorted weapons missileX2, lascannon, reaper
-6 bikes, some options
-5 terms, some options
-2 rhinos
-30+ cultists
-land raider
-predator
-heldrake
-chosen from DV
-DV helbrute, multimelta and fist
-assorted characters-lord, term lord, sorcerer, daemon prince, chaos lieutenant, proxy dark apostle
-I could probably scrape together about 5 possessed...

Any way any comments are welcome and thanks in advance.

So to summarise the background: You hated that GW neglected Chaos marines for years so you decided to pick the niche CSM faction that has never and will likely never be in the spotlight. Interesting but hey, it's your money/time. The best part of the hipster god is you can get endless mileage out of lines like "you've probably never heard of him".

...except for Nurgle getting an enormous boost in models and new rules both. "oh, but that's not MY chaos." Yeah, well, then specify that it wasn't chaos marines you wanted to get all the attention, you wanted your special snowflakes that have never had more focus than the Black Templars to get an unrealistic boost.

Chaos have gotten a HUGE influx of new models, special characters and a more diverse greater faction with one subfaction getting its own book and another planned.

So after your whiny rant you're doing exactly what you said you weren't going to do?

Well, there's a surprise.

your mind

I dunno.
I feel for you.
Chaos was the three eyed stepchild for a long time.
The list looks fun.
I wonder why you don't take advantage of some new kit and rules, but seems like a very fun army to play with and against.
I dunno. I like it but I also dont collect chaos marines.
Well, I do have some but I haven't gotten them painted yet...

Wow lots of snark, no substance. Thanks for contributing to the thread. So after I swore off 8e, I realized I was being silly, became inspired by the concept of Malal, and decided to jump in and try a game again. And I asked for a bit of direction army wise and listed by available models. What is such a surprise? And why is discussing your opinion considered a whiny rant? Interesting post, thanks for your time.

What? Are you comparing Chaos to the BT? That's just....imbecilic. If you think that the entirety of the forces of The Chaos Legions and Renegades are as important as the BL, then well done sir. You are hilariously imbalanced. Now if you are comparing AL to BT, well yes they are about equal on focus, but (this is important so focus) I was not referring to the fact that the AL did not get lots of new models and focus, but the CHAOS ARMY ITSELF. Saying "suck it chaos, you have DG, what are you complain about" is like saying "sorry salamander guy, what are you complaining about? SM get a primarch." It's just not helpful. Unless you weren't here to help anything, just troll a new guy. Good job on racking up one more precious post count.

According to GW, Death Guard are an entirely different faction to Chaos Space Marines. If that holds, then his argument is still valid.

A malal-themed army is a fun idea, but you will probably be hamstringing yourself if you don't base it off one of the traitor legions. They all have little perks, warlord traits, and stratagems that are fun and useful.

You mentioned alpha legion - they're actually quite good, as all shots from greater than 12" have -1 to hit, and their warlord cannot die until all your characters have been killed. (When your warlord dies, another chaos character yells 'I AM ALPHARIUS'.)

While I have a few complaints about 8th edition, it's still fun to play, and if you're excited to try out a new army, I say go for it!

Wow. People can be so mean. He is asking for advice with his list guys! Remember rule 1! There is no need to be so snarky.
And just a little Alpha Legion tip: CSM models indeed don't do them justice, but you can use loyalist marine kits to make an army that is more true to the AL aesthetic.
