With the Thousand sons getting their codex in the future, do you think they should get new unique models to flesh out their army? if so what? what models would you add from the codex range?

That's the army I have and the one I'm still building on. The units are already fairly spread out in terms of uniqueness, given that they are detailed as much as they are.

If anything, I'd like to see more units that look like Ahriman, or at least those associated with him

Rubric terminators. Rubric bikers/raptors don't seem to fit their implacable playstyle. Maybe a rubric dread as well as a psyker one?

I want some of those Daemon Engines from the Tome of Fate RPG book, like the Aetar Ray and Mirrorfiend.

Rubric terminators.
They have those, Scarab Terminators are Rubric Terminators led by a Sorcerer.

Pretty much any engine / vehicle getting a sorcery upgrade of sorts.
I could see their Predator becoming a hover-tank.
Any Daemon Engine getting a more Egyptian prettying up.
Stuffed a bunch of pictures in here:

That should do for now!

I'd add a plastic sprue to the Tzaangor Skyfire box to replace their bows with arcane sniper rifles.

I'd add a sprue to the Rubric box to give them a melee load out.

I'd add a sprue to the Scarab box to give them something like the old Ushabti weapons.

I'd remove the sorcerers from the rubric and scarab units and dramatically reduce the cost of rubrics and scarabs given their limited load out. I'd make them -1 ballistic skill unless a sorcerer joins their unit or is within 12" to help justify the cost drop.

I'd remove exalted sorcerers from the index and replace that unit with a Sorcerer Coven. A unit numbering 1 to 10 aspiring sorcerers (rank 2) that can be detatched to join other units. If the unit numbers 3 or more, they gain access to 2 unique spells. A salvo large blast not requiring LOS and a high strength beam attack to fill the anti horde and anti tank issues the army has.

I'd introduce a new flying vehicle called the Silver Sliver which is effectively a flying Rhino with the fly special rule and gains access to coruscating beam ability and can be the new chaos bomber type flyer.

Honestly they had a major release not long back I wouldn't expect anything besides the codex.

The issue is what they got really doesn't warrant them getting a stand alone codex. There's just not enough variety or flexibility to make it worth the effort.

Probably some Rubric dreadnoughts or what have you.

I'm sure like DG they'll get a ton of new stuff

Nothing. There is loads of armies out there that are far more in need of new models. And that includes some big, cornerstone factions of 40k such as Eldar, Imperial Guard and generic Chaos Space Marines. A subfaction of CSM that has just seen a major release is pretty far down the list of priorities.

OK...so lets say those armys got all of their new models, what do you think Thousand Sons should get (from either a lore or gameplay perspective)
Out of curiosity, what models are Eldar and Imperial Guard missing?

Updating the Vehicle lineup would appeal to me.
Some kind of super mutant horror sounds cool.
Getting a new Daemon Prince model would motivate me to buy some of those. (current model is ugly)
Some kind of leader Tzaangor.

Having had a pretty good release already it would be quite cool to see the following, just to flesh them out:

1) The psychically controlled battle automata from 30k. Stick an aspiring sorcerer with two so you have a similar set up to Kastellans and datasmith;

2) Psychic dreadnought (not Helbrute).

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

I like the idea of rubricae models being sans leader. But then have, you know, psyker leaders who were worth a damn.

I think a sorceror coven is fluffy and thematic, but i wouldn't remove exalted sorcerors.

Silver sliver? Silver tower maybe? Doomwings and firestorms (from memory) being the new heldrakes. A slow and purposeful flying fortress capable of holding troops. That would be cool.

I'd throw the psychic snipers from 30k to the suggestion box.
They still don't have models, and chaos currently lacks any form if snipers.

"rubric devestators" would be cool.

The previously mentioned castellax achea (especially as I currently use two as helbrute) and psychic dreadnauts are great concepts.

Though the biggest need isn't quite model wise, the sorcerer/exalted need heavy rule expansion to be able to do thier job.
They are supposed to be ALL the supporting characters at once, and they simply aren't.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

It's been around 200 years since Magnus pulled his planet out of the warp and Cawl announced he had Thousand Sons Geneseed in storage. Considering Magnus has decided to take back control of his legion, there's no reason a Thousand Sons army couldn't include an updated unit list. Then of course there's the fact that he sent half his fleet away on a secret mission just before the Space Wolves attacked Prospero. So it's possible the Thousand Sons would be in a rebuilding stage.

Actual strategists.

What they have is a bunch of witches who like to think that they are smart. They have nothing when they are compared to Creed or more cost effective solutions.

This is coming from someone who fights these guys all the time.

You jest, but an HQ with an aura worth a damn definitely wouldn't be bad. Lord of the Thousand Sons is quite possibly the worst aura in the game.

Some Havoks and melee Rubric marines would be nice, though I'm not sure how fluffy the melee units would be.

From a balance perspective, what they could really use are some different HQ options that aren't just more sorcerers. You only need so many sorcerers in an army right now, and after that they are stuck with expensive demon princes. Or at least access to multiple psychic disciplines so you aren't getting redundant, and give them different auras based on what discipline they have. Like 30K tsons do sort of.

I'm curious how people feel about tzaangors. I actually love the new variations for them in AoS and wouldn't mind a few more crossing over. They might even make the bow wielding guys have sniper rules, so at least one CSM army could have some type of sniper in it. Of course you run into the problem of the CSM army being light on CSM but that's apparently just going to be a thing for the rest of existence.

I would also like to see helbrute variations for tsons. A rubric variation would be great, as would a librarian version.

As for things that are even less likely, maybe specialized rubric squads. Where everyone has a heavy or special weapon. Sniper rubrics guided by a sorcerer was a suggestion I liked, kinda like tau sniper drones.

I'd like to see a few options to the Exalted Sorcerers not just wargear, but a few options to reflect the variety in Psykers the Thousand Sons had. Sorcerer/Chaplains that invigorate the Rubrics to move faster or fight better in CC. Sorcerer/Techmarines that control small units of Robots, perhaps a couple of Surviving members of the Rhetai War Sect sporting twin force swords. Perhaps some surviving members of the Hidden ones, either being able to act as snipers and/or scouts.

IMO GW did a pretty food job of making Death Guard into an actual army instead of a Chaos army with Plague Marines. I'd love to see this with all the Chaos cults, giving each one a very unique flavor. The Thousand Sons are supposed to be sorcerers without equal, but even back in 7th, they just felt like spam. I have a feeling that the 7th edition release of Thousand Sons was just part of what they have ready to go. If the Thousand Sons got the same treatment as Death Guard, we could easily a 4-6 unit release over 2 weeks that could really flesh out the Thousand Sons and make them more than just Chaos with Rubrics and more Sorcerers than normal.

Remember how Wraithguards were originally stated to move slowly and hard to react unless a Spiritseer was nearby? And now we have Wraithblades. I wouldn't be surprised if they do something with T-sons like that.

As for what units to add, some kind of daemon engine and living statue thing. I remember the lore saying that prior to the heresy T-sons had animated statue automata on Prospero that guarded sacred places. Would not be surprised if these made a return.

Yeah, I am jesting. But if you discount psychic abilities, Thousand Sons' rules do not reflect the fact that they value intelligence and knowledge.

I would like to see them fleshed out in a similar way to what has happened with DeathGuard. A couple more HQ choices a warmachine (I'd like to see some kind of demon engine) and a dread. It would be also cool if GW would bring out some plastic upgrade sprues for other Tanks.
