So I picked up a friends renegade Gallant which was really well painted for my daemons army. Obviously it can't be buffed now in 8th.

You're saving 41 points over the next cheapest Knight, the Errant. You're gaining the option of choosing which of the three weapons you want to use in CC. You're losing D6 S9 ap -4 D6 damage melta range 18 shots per turn.

Considering knights can leave combat, shoot and charge with no penalty this is a big deal. And the fact is almost all the other Knights have one of the sword or gauntlet and all have the feet anyway making them just as effective. The only benefit is picking feet against infantry, sword against t5 and 6 multi wound models and the gauntlet against t7 and your monolith landraider types, pushing that -4 and getting some mortal wounds out of it. Not the biggest bonus IMO

Is there a lot you can add to your army for 41 points to balance out the lack of thermal cannon. That's essentially 6 more bloodletters, daemonettes or plaugebearers. Even in imperium arimes 41 points maybe gives you some sponsons for you tanks, some extra wargear etc.

The only thing I can think of is that people will take the Gallant so unseriously they might not pour a lot of shots into it, giving it time to hammer a monolith, land raider or another knight.

Can anyone give me any other reason to run it competitively? It's a shame if I never use it again, and I doubt meany people will want to buy it now that it's basically redundant

I think your assessment is pretty well spot on. Honestly, I would just order one of the weapon arms off eBay. The Gallant is effectively worthless now. With an additional arm, you would be able to use either of the CC arms alongside the cannon. Thermal Cannons don't run that much on eBay, just make sure you get the entire arm (sometimes people list just the lower arm without the shoulder).

If they let it reroll 1s in CC it would have saved it, so pissed off. Think the game is going towards single wound infantry bulk anyway tbh. At least you can give it a 4++ with strategems now. Hopefully they make the renegade knights codex for 8th and there's something in there that makes the gallant relevant again

It should have had a rule that let it pile in twice as long as it uses a different weapon each time. So you could pile in and attack with the fist and then pile in again and use the sword.

That would probably a bit too much. I was thinking more among the lines of +1 attack (for a total of 5) for having two melee weapon arms and reroll 1s to hit in the fight phase.

Probably. It could have been able to make an additional attack with a different weapon each turn. So you could do 4 attacks with the fist and get a bonus attack with the fist. It wouldn't really help when you would use the feet though.

+1 attack would translate into +3 attacks with the feet, so in that regard it would be buffed as well. Not to mention the reroll 1s. But most of the time you don't take a Gallant for killing hordes anyway, you take it to one-shot or at least severely cripple other Knights, Spartans, Stormsurges, Wraithknights and other "light" superheavies on the charge.

I'm not sure what you would need the shoulder for, there's a perfectly convenient magnet mounting point in the elbows.

In theory you could lift the entire arm on and off, but I see little reason not to just fully magnetise a warden for every single arm option honestly.

Because it sounds like the model is already assembled, so in order to mount the magnet, it would have to be cut apart.
