McDonalds announced awhile back that they were going to serve Mulan Szechuan on October 7th for... I don't know how long.

It's because "Szechuan sauce" has become a massive internet meme since it was featured as a major joke in the opening episode of Rick and Morty Season 3, where Rick trolled his alien captors and maybe Morty as well by implying that the whole reason he invented the portal gun and became an interdimensional/galactic terrorist was because he wanted to find an alternate universe where McDonalds still served Szechuan sauce, a limited time offer released in conjunction with the Disney movie Mulan in 1997 and since discontinued.

Spoiler:

Some people have accused the show and McDonalds of being racist because its the internet and someone will call it racist eventually, so it might be about that. More hilariously maybe that particular McDonalds didn't have any XD

Normally I'd be stunned by the sheer stupidity of it, but this is the US we're talking about....

I'm not sure what I find more stupid, that fact alone, or that people will probably buy them.

Insane. 500$ for a small package of sauce

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

That makes it seem like that sauce is food of the gods.
However, looking at the listed ingredients it seems to be just a kind of teriyaki sauce? If had to guess I think the only reason people want this sauce so badly is because it is rare. What is it with the US and mass hysteria?
Every time I think the US can't get any weirder, it does get weirder. Does Europe seem just as strange to you guys over there?

I like Rick & Morty, but when I saw that joke I thought it fell pretty flat. It felt a bit forced, or something. I mean if Rick & Morty joke that didn't quite work can start a real live craze for a long forgotten dipping sauce, I assume there must be at least 200 projects out there building a real live Gearhead, and at least 200 activist groups dedicating to explaining that 'gearhead' is racist.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I don't think it was much of a joke as what it exactly was in the series itself; a red herring employed by Rick to confuse people which conveniently also serves as a red herring employed by the writers/producers of the show to confuse the audience because Rick and Morty likes fething with the people watching it as much as the people actually in it. Yet somehow indeed it ended up becoming a huge internet craze, which is certainly confusing but most of the funny for it when I think about it comes from how people reacted to it rather than the bits in the episode itself.

Yeah, maybe joke isn't the right word because not much in Rick & Morty is so much laugh out loud funny as it is... I don't know. I've heard a bunch of stand up comics talk about routines that use all the beats and tricks of comedy but aren't really about big laughs... those routines have a name but it escapes me now.

Anyway, to maybe explain my point better, having watching Community & now Rick & Morty both the gearhead joke and the Szechuan riffs are very much Dan Harmon's stock in trade. It's a cool kind of joke and a big part of why I love both shows, but that doesn't mean they always work. The gearhead thing worked because they introduced a character called gearhead, who was a decent sight gag and who fit in the story neatly without needing to be anything more than that. Then like a season after establishing him he does the heel turn, and gives a reason that is not only reasonable, but actually makes a decent point because we in the audience didn't think twice about the character being described purely by his most obvious physical characteristics. It fit the plot, gave interesting detail about a minor character, made an interesting point about our own tendency to accept racial descriptors, and it did it all in about 10 seconds without interrupting the flow of the show.

The szechuan thing didn't work for a few of reasons. It sat awkwardly in the episode, it was forced in as an explanation where no explanation was needed. And on top of that it didn't work in any way other than 'this doesn't mean anything and then we can add a layer of irony by pretending to add a layer of irony by making it obvious that this doesn't mean anything.' And then they add the reference to Rick achieving it in season 8, which just was a more awkward re-tread of the 'six seasons and a movie' joke from Community.

And now look how much I've written on one misfired joke. Which in a sense is no different to lining up at McDonalds to buy a novelty re-release of a sauce from 90s Disney movie. Gyaargh.

What... What if they knew this would happen... What if that is the point With how insanely nihilistic and materialist Rick and Morty is, what if that whole bit was thrown in simply because the people making it knew it would explode into something bigger than it had any right to be.

It wouldn't be the first time someone knew their audience so well that they successfully managed to troll the entire fan base. Hideaki Ano is still raking in money from Evangelion merchandise!

Yeah, I know. But 'we know this is stupid, you know this stupid, but we'll put it in the show and then you go nuts 'ironically' chasing a Mulan dipping sauce' isn't even nihilist. It's just self-referential nonsense. Getting a reaction over something stupid isn't an achievement. It's what 12 year trolls do on the internet every single night. In fact its even worse than that, because the audience knows it is being trolled but still plays its part anyway.

IDK. I think trolling your audience without turning them all against you like George Lucas requires a certain amount of eerie talent.

Also, can't have a McDonalds feth up without Wendy's chipping in.

Yeah, but it is deeply unnecessary. There's a difference between nihilist and inane.

Also, isn't this just a feth up? McDonalds and Rick & Morty signed up for a cross promotion, and McDonalds way underestimated the demand it would create? It's less a masterwork in trolling and performance nihilism, and more Rick & Morty including an awkward cross-promotion in the first episode of a new series, and McDonalds way under-estimating the level of demand for the gimmick product.

It could just be that Dan really liked and misses this sauce and wanted to put pressure on Mcdonalds to bring it back. As with most things in the show, you're never quite sure why it's there.

If there's anything to protest about to McDonalds, it's those bloody cheap(er) burger offers on the back of bus tickets, which state they're not valid at any restaurant with a drive-thru.

The closest Maccy D's to me all have a drive-thru.

I demand satisfaction! *Grabs plywood and a marker pen*

There are so many companies that put out tons of cringe-worthy posts, trying to be "hip" and be relevant to the latest memes. And it usually always ends up like this:

And then you have Wendys, who mastered the social media game. I think Denny's was doing fairly well in that department as well for a while.
