I have been playing 40k for awhile now with Space Marines and I have been interested in starting up an Imperial Guard army. Since I honestly don't know the first thing about how to play the IG since they have different tactics than the Space Marines, I wanted to ask on here what I should get for a 1.5Kpt list. I have already made a rough list though I really don't know if its good or not, so would you be able to tell me what I should and shouldn't have on it.
LIST:
HQ: 2x Company Commander
Elite: 2x Cadian Command Squad & 2x Commissar
Troops: 5x10 Man Cadian Guardsmen & 2x 5 Man Scions
Heavy Support: 3 Heavy Weapon Teams & 3 Leman Russ Battle Tanks
Transport: 2 Chimeras
I'm mainly going to be fighting against Tyranids and Space Marines as well if that affects your decision in any way.

That's a perfectly decent framework. A couple basilisks would also be nice additions, and you can use their vehicle upgrade sprue for your Leman Russes or Chimeras.
You're missing a fast attack slot however. Add 3 Sentinels and you'll be able to fill out the 9 CP detachment. I use mine in scout mode most often, and I have them scout forward and create a "no deepstrike" bubble in front of my battleline. Flamethrowers work well for that, or you can go cheap and use multilasers.

Astropaths. Cheap Smite spam, and the help your shooters vs cover.
I’m not a big fan of HWSs as they are too easy to kill. Mortars are an exception if you can hide them, and they are also cheaper.
If you can find Hellhounds, they make fantastic fast attackers.

First off, welcome to the Guard. Second, with the new codex there aren't really any bad choices, but you have to decide how nasty you want your army to be and how you want it to look and play thematically. I've been playing IG for probably 12-13 years and had my first game with the new book two days ago. On to your unit selections.
Company commander- Very very good. Keep him cheap and next to your HWT and he will make them do wonderful things until they are inevitably killed.
Command squads- I don't like them anymore. Too fragile and their job can be easily accomplished by Scions or veterans, but buy some of the boxes because you'll need the guns and the kit is phenomenal.
Commissars- good. They will help you survive enemy shooting attacks, but unless you run blobs of conscripts morale from melee losses will be meaningless as all your guys will already be dead.
Infantry squads- super cheap roadblocks and objective holders. I would never leave home without at least 40.
Scions- for thematic purposes I prefer 10 man squads but they rock. Slap a Tempestor prime in there with them. He's worth it.
HWT- good but fragile. They're very cheap points wise and as long as they're alive and next to a commander they are quite destructive. They will not survive long if the enemy starts shooting at them.
Leman Russ- holy Emperor they got better. Double firing the turret makes them awesome. I ran a standard Russ and a Punisher and they wrecked all kinds of stuff. 100% worth it, but be warned if you run more than 2 or 3 you may be labeled an donkey-cave.
Chimeras- not great, but they deliver veteran squads where they need to go and veterans are still awesome.
Things you didn't mention:
Tank commanders/Pask- brutally good until they die. They will die as nobody can allow them to survive long if they want to win a game.
Veterans- a staple since 4th edition, they've always been good and they still are. Scions ARE better, vets in transports live longer but they are more expensive. Probably my all time favorite unit in 40k as they have been my MVP squads in more games than I can count.
Taurox- Point for point better than the Chimera, but the Chimera holds more dudes and looks way cooler.
Ogryns- fun and fluffy. Decent.
Support characters- they're all pretty good at what they do for what they cost.
Basilisks- pre codex they were better than Russe's. Now I'd rather have a Russ.
Wyvern- A stock Punisher is a lot better for only a little more.
Sentinels- surprisingly decent. Not great, but not bad and you need cheap fast attack units for a Brigade. Plus, they are sweet models.
Hellhounds- they're awesome and cheap, but they will not live long.
Super heavy tanks- stupidly good. Only take if you want to rape and pillage and have no regard for the other player's feelings.
Platoon commander- get some. They're 20 points. You have no excuse.
Conscripts- they're still pretty handy. However I personally refuse to use them as I view my IG army as an elite city fighting company of highly trained and experienced warriors who would never entertain the notion of letting a mob of boyscouts take the lead. My guys would lay down their lives to allow them time to evacuate and they would absolutely refuse to let them near the front lines. (See what I mean by theme?)
Build a Brigade, it's easy to do and those CP's are really handy. Always remember that your stuff is cheap and plentiful on the table, but not very tough. You will suffer a lot of casualties, but most of your stuff punches way harder than it's point value would suggest.
Never assume your lasguns will kill anything. It will feel like it takes 400 lasgun shots to kill a single Marine. Killing 4-5 guys in a game with lasguns is like, an amazing accomplishment. Fortunately, you will have special and heavy weapons falling over themselves in an effort to get shots in. The big guns are the steak, the special and heavy weapons are the bread and mashed potatoes. The lasguns are the after dinner mint.

I second the brigade thing. You're basically just a few FA choices and 1 HQ choice away from it. Someone mentioned in another thread that you can use the Scout Sentinel's move to block off potential deepstrikers from getting close to something important (by fooperdooding the "deploy 9" away from enemy models" rules deepstrikers have). EDIT: Semantics!

I wouldn't say abusing; it is pretty much the entire point of sentinels. "Utilising" would fit much better.

Hello guys,
hope it's okay if I post my questions here. I want to start a imperial army with the Empire of Men KS, but I don't know much about the imps.
landl's quick guide helped a lot so far in having a little start to build up that army. Most times I will be playing with Adeptus Mechanicus. My tactic (so far) is to keep the tanks alive by the tech priests and hold objectives with the skiitari rangers or vanguards.
Don't know if this could work, but I will give it a try.
My army list for imps would look like this:
Commander: one with two power fists and one with a power sword and "normal" weapon.
Infantry squads: 4x10 people in case I want to play imps only
HWT: squad of three to take out infantry
Leman Russ: three of them, don't know if only one demolisher or maybe two.
Basilisks: I realy like the EoM version of this one, plus it is quite cheap, but I am not sure if I should take one or two.
Baneblade: One of that Stahlratte masterpiece, love that one.
Valkeryies: Like the Basilisk, not sure, cause my feelings are mixed. Don't know if they are worth the points.
Sentinels: Well two at least, when adding the Adeptus Mechanicus, I can use them as Dunecrawlers
Manticore: I like the look of that one, but the rules are kinda .... hm.... weak? Anyone who can tell me otherwise?
That would be it so far. I want to keep the army in that cool WWI/II look and most of my infantry will be women. Commisar will come from Wargame exklusive and I realy want to keep the amount of GW miniatures low, cause I don't quite like the Imp infantry.
Hope you guys, could help me find a good mix for my future army list.

Nothing abusive about it - it's both fluffy and sensible.

In fairness, IG players are having a hard time of it at the moment, as there is a lot of hate out there right now. It's not that these guys are intentionally abusing the rules in any way... it's more that the entirety of 8th edition is designed around the idea that its very hard -not- to abuse the rules if you play IG.
To the OP, I would suggest looking for a legion/company/unit type that you like the look of, and making a nice fluffy list with it. There really are no bad choices right now.

Yes but I'm one of those that are actually defending them. I just happened to use that phrase habitually to refer to using something for unintended purposes (at least how I view it. not the scout sentinel thing, but using the 9" restriction as a way to push things back) but apparently that was more interesting than the thread.

I don't see IG abusing any rules. They are simply playing with the army and rules they have. They just happen to be very good rules. Some people are just salty. I don't even play IG and haven't since 3rd.
