So RAW, a company veteran can take any combination of bolter/special/combi/heavy weapon.

While combinations like plasma cannon/plasma gun sounds less intriguing (since youre paying for them eiher way), but since you can fire all of your weapons (less pistol), this means that you can take a bolter and a special weapon and fire them both without -1 modifier, functioning better than its combi counterpart for less points. Thoughts?

That's not RAW at all. Go re-read the actual options, it's very specific about what can be swapped out for what.

From Stepping Into a New Edition of Warhammer 40,000:

Q: Can a model take the same wargear option more than once? For example, can a Space Marine Terminator replace his storm bolter with a cyclone missile launcher and another storm bolter, and then replace its ‘new’ storm bolter with a heavy flamer?

A: No.

I don't see how you're getting a bolter and a special weapon on a single model.

From the entry:

'any space marine veteran may replace their bolt pistol with... an item from melee weapons... list.'
'any space marine veteran may replace their chainsword with... a bolt gun, or an item from the... combi-weapons or special weapons list.'

a space marine exchanges his bolt pistol for a chainsword, then exchanges his two chainswords with a boltgun and/or from the combi/special weapons list.

There used to be a similar issue with DA veteran squad back in 6th and 7th ed where you can take a storm bolter in exchange of his bolt pistol, allowing to you carry two non-pistol ranged weapon. It didnt matter much back then as you could only shoot with one weapon.

I think you missed the post showing you can't do that second swap. Once an item is exchanged, it's done.

Then read the FAQ I posted as to why that's not possible.

Yeah I thought it strange. I was trying to make sense of what the battlescribe people thought when they coded the company veteran entry.

What is strange is that the sergeant may not pick a SS and anything from the sergeant equipment list. The veterans can use a SS and combi/specialweapon/pistol/CC weapon. The sarge can only exchange both chainsword and bolt pistol for items from the sergeant equipment list. The SS is not listed there. In the codex SM update 1.0 the second bullet point is changed to : "Any model may replace their bolt pistol with a storm shield or an item from the Melee Weapons or Pistols lists.’". This includes the sergeant, but when he swaps his bolt pistol for a SS he is left with the chainsword only, which he cannot exchange against anything from the sergeant equipment list, because he needs both bolt pistol and chainsword to do that.

Yes. This is also true of Vanguard Veterans, and that tends to be how I equip my VVs.
