Greetings!

I am a returning (very casual) 40K player who is looking to get back into the game! Just wanted to ask a few questions before I delve further!

1. Are there any major changes in the game itself? (Last time I played was 2014 I believe)
2. Some armies I had in mind of collecting are; Space Marines, Tau, Eldar/Craftworlds and Orks. What do these guys excel in and what are some of their weaknesses.
3. For the armies that I stated, what would be good to buy for a 1,500 point list.

A lot to ask but if someone wouldn't mind lending a hand, that would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers fellas!

The game has changed quite a bit. The new edition has essentially reset everything, with updated stats and rebalanced points costs for all armies. There’s starter index books with all the new rules, new codexes are being released rapid fire, and new ways to play the game.

I can’t comment on any particulars for those armies, but there are very few really bad units anymore. The best way to get a quick and playable 1500 list is usually 2 of the getting started boxes for your army of choice.

Ultranarines/Sallies/etc, GK and Craftworlds all have new books. If that's important to you stick with them. The other major marine chapters and Orks won't have a book until at least next year, but they will get updates in Chapter Approved, which is due out this December.

Having a proper codex does wonders for an army.

There are 'Start Collecting' boxes on GW's website. Look at those plus boxed games for cheaper entries back into an army.

Describing the ups and downs of each faction is hard to do in under 10 pages. I'd suggest checking out some other threads specific to races.

1. New edition has great rules (mostly). They're free on GW's website if you want to read them.
2. Space Marines are the only ones on your list with a codex right now (Eldar's is right around the corner though). They have an incredible variety of units, their top tier stuff right now mostly revolves around shooting. Space Marines have received a new type of unit called Primaris Space Marines. They're essentially a normal Space Marine with two wounds, two attacks, and a slightly better rifle. They also look fantastic.
3. If you buy the big $140 starter box (that's the price on amazon or most retailrs, GW will charge you $160), you get a fullsize hardbound rulebook and two roughly 1000 point armies of Deathguard and Primaris Space Marines. The models are gorgeous and from a dollar point its a very good deal.

Also, there's a lot of toxicity on Dakkadakka right now, so don't let it get you down too much. As far as I can tell, the vast majority of 40k players are really enjoying this edition. GW's sales are way up on the year.
