Hello all, attempting again to revive Necron interest in the sub.

I posted a few list ideas yesterday over at https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/742813.page

This is a more focused list that I am hoping would offer a challenge for someone running Tau or Space Marines.

List:

Battalion Detachment (2006 points)

- HQ -
Cryptek
Overlord - Staff of Light

- Troops -
10 x Immortals - Tesla Carbines
15 x Warriors
15 x Warriors

- Elites -
10 x Deathmarks

- Fast Attack -
Canoptek Tomb Sentinel (Forge World)

- Heavy Support -
Tesseract Ark - 2x Tesla Cannons (Forge World)
Tesseract Ark - 2x Tesla Cannons (Forge World)
Monolith

Concept attempts to combine some distraction, mobility, and resiliency into a list armed with some tough units. The Sentinel, Deathmarks, and Monolith are all in reserve, protecting them from alpha strikes and setting up across the board. The Sentinel chases the biggest vehicle threat, the Deathmarks the biggest infantry that, while the Monolith provides some flexibility. Deathmarks and Monolith could also camp on objectives. The Arks can range the field usually, and armed with a multi-profile weapon and 2x tesla cannons can also provide some mid-range back up to the troop formation as it marches up the field.

Thoughts on how this might perform? Wish I had some points for scarab flank screeners / objective chasers.

How have you found the monolith to perform? I have never used one, but on paper they seem quite weak to me. I think the rest of your list seems pretty strong, but. the monolith points could really go a long way elsewhere if you weren't set on using it. Plus the deep striking death marks already distract pretty well.

The monolith has only featured in one game of mine, against an opponent without too many shooting options. Battle reports suggest monolith performance is highly dependent on adversary composition and doctrine. In particular, I worry about the 2x Venerable Dreadnoughts with twin autocannons that routinely strip wounds off my Necron vehicles. They haven't seen the Monolith yet.

With 2x TA, I am not relying on the Monolith for heavy guns. The list also doesn't place any troops on the tomb world. Intent is that the Monolith can help finish what the DM and Stalker start while buying additional time for the backfield units. If the Monolith dies first, it may buy an extra round for the other distractions.

If the Monolith were to go, what would you suggest replace it?

Why not two squads of 5 deathmarks for maximum effect?

The handful of times I've played DM in minimum squads, they get wiped before RP kicks in. I think one max squad may be more durable than two minimums. However, if we're playing for objectives, I may easily do as you suggest as it costs nothing to implement.

monolith definitely has to go, its too expensive for what it offers. The sentinel is okay, very situational, and having a big base is bad for a deepstriking unit.

what units do you have, what have you access to and how do you like playing?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
But if your looking at killing tau or space marines, invest in tomb blades with gauss, wraith/nightbringer combo and MWBD immortals with tesla. Will eviscerate their lines. Back with TA for tanks/transports/dreds and your GTG

At the moment, my inventory is this:

Monolith
3x Triarch Stalkers (can use to proxy)
2x Annihilation Barge (ordered, will use to proxy)
5 x Deathmarks
38 x Warrior Models
20 x Warrior Models armed w/ Immortal Weapons (use either way)
24 x Scarab bases
3x Crypteks
Overlords

I'm still trying to figure out my playstyle in 8th. I've enjoyed the modeling aspect so expanded my army quickly, but have still played under a dozen games.

I have heard mixed reviews on tomb blades and wraiths. A 6-unit detachment of destroyers would also fit in the Monoliths points, as would fleshing out the warrior squads and getting like 20 scarab bases. Why would wraiths or TB be better than those options?

because to be frank, warriors, monoliths and destroyers are bad. all are overpriced. Wraiths are insanely durable, 3++ and t5 is very nice. They are meant to be a screen for the nightbringer, as he is a beast.

Tomb blades are incredibly lethal, put gauss on them and they will clear squads of a time if you play them correctly. Dont invest too much points in them, i run a squad of 9 w/ gauss, 5 w/ vanes, 5 w/ looms.

your deliberately nerfing yourself if you take warriors en masse, they are that bad. slow, easy to wipe, easy to deny RP to, and their offensive output isnt that great. Scarabs are okay, dont do much damage but takes more firepower than you expect to kill them.

Tesla immortals with mwbd is good, but I feel more than 1 squad may be too much for most applications, as you really need a second overlord to get the most out of them.

Necrons are an expensive army, and do not play well if you make mistakes, as everything in our index is very overpriced. So every loss hurts really badly.

Until the codex comes out, try to avoid RP as much as possible, as its currently quite weak. Quantam shielding is awesome, it has happened a few times where the only thing stopping me from being tabled is the durability of our vehicles.

I like my lists fast so I like wraiths and scarabs and tomb blades.

Its not that easy to wipe out 20 warriors. SM would need ~120 attacks with bolters. Going to S5 would still require ~100 attacks. Its very unlikely that a SM army has that many bolters. Wiping out 10 immortals is a piece of cake. Quantum shielding is very strong, i expect it to get nerfed in the codex. It basically nullifies lascannons and meltas.

But it's not hard to prevent them from doing anything they were meant to do by either charging with T8's or out manuevering them with speed.

You want to charge them with a land raider ? Why ?

Precisely. The point I was making is that as long as you maintain +12" away from warriors they're generally not a big threat, hence not worth devoting firepower over other higher target priority.

So while not a bad unit as you say, they're not particularly good either.

Also, quantum shielding is nasty, but it goes down pretty quick with focused plasma double taps. And there are plethora of plasmas in the current edition.

I would swap the Sentinel with a Triarch Stalker with Twin Heavy Gauss Cannon because your 2 Tesseract Arks can benefit from re-rolling 1s if they all hot the same target. Aslo, while the Sentinel is good and has DS it lacks Quantum Shielding which means that if it is focus fired it will die in 1 turn if your opponent sees it as a threat.

I don't really like Battalion Detachments that much either. While you get 6CP I rather have 4-5 via a mixture of 1-2 Vanguard/Outrider/Spearhead Detachments.

I would suggest something like this;

In response to some of the feedback, I have compiled another list. The Monolith, Troops, and most HQs are out. Added a TS and a TA. I don't have enough experience to trust fast necrons and CC, so I've avoided it for the time being.

This list has a lot of anti-infantry (targeting devastators, hellblasters, and wound drones, not primary characters) and anti-vehicle deep strike. Core intention is to establish a rear firebase, with enough in reserve to force him to react to it if I go first, or to seriously counterpunch his main thrusts if he goes first. I expect those deep striking units to draw attention and die quickly. If he ignores the Sentinels, they can charge. If he ignores the DM, they can threaten objectives. Plus-side: all units will be where they need to be on their first turn, with no one needing to slog across the board, leading to high efficiency.
