Ok, so back when I was playing you had to have a minimum 1HQ unit and 2 Troops, and go from there. Also, unless you were playing with friends or Apocalypse you couldn't mix say Space Marines and Imperial Guard units. 8th Ed seems to be a lot more fluid, and from what I can tell you can basically field anything you want from the same faction, the only time you are restricted is if you are trying to make specific formations for bonus Command Points. Am I reading this right? Specifically is it legal for me to field Units from different chapters and say, 2 Culexus Assassins? Maybe some IG artillery as well? Thanks, and please let me know if I need to clarify.

Min requirements depends on the detachments you are running

You need to share at least 1 keyword

You can run a completely mixed soup of units if you really want but some armies will lose bonuses if mixed the wrong way.

I'd recommend reading all GWs own up-to-speed articles first:

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/05/05/new-warhammer-40000-battle-forged-armiesgw-homepage-post-4/

That one deals with army composition. If you go on the Warhammer Community site and search 'new warhammer 40000' it will bring up all their '101' type articles. They all have an image similar to this:

Alos, there's a sticky post at the top of the YMDC Forum, will all current FAQs and Errata in. I'd have a read of the 'Stepping into a New Edition' document, as that's designed to ease players of older editions into 8th (or 'the new Warhammer 40,000', as GW calls it, Apple-style).

Hope that helps, and happy gaming!

So as long as I don't care about meeting reqs for a specific detachment and the units share the same faction keyword, I can run whatever? Like say 9 Librarians plus whatever filler I have leftover points for? It would be an absurd mix, but legal?

In a nuttsheel, you pick a detachment and whenyou do you give that detachment a keyword.

"space wolves" "Imperium"

Everything in the detachment has to share that keyword. Imperium obviously gives you a lot of choices from a lot of armies. But a lost of the big bonuses from the armies (strategems, chapter tactics) can only be used in you have a detachment with the more specific keyword. A battleforged army can be made up of any number of detachments, but all your detachments must also share a keyword to be battleforged.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Awesome! They're great little info nuggets, those articles. Helped bring me up to speed before 8th was launched.

This it not strictly correct:

  • An army is Battle-Forged if all units are in Detachments.
  • Most Detachments require all units in the Detachment to be from one Faction (i.e. one specific Faction Keyword must be shared by all units in the detachment).
  • In a Matched Play Army, all units must be from one Faction or be Unaligned

  • It is perfectly legal in Open or Narrative Play to build a Battle-Forged Army with an Imperium Detachment and an Aeldari Detachment. This is not legal in Matched Play.

Ok so I have been looking for a post like this! Here are my own questions so that I can hopefully learn this barney style. (Bare with me.)

Lets say I'm running a Battalion detachment. I want it to be CSM Night Lords based. Ex.

    HQ -
    Chaos lord w/ Jump pack
    Be'lakor

    Troops
    Cultists x3 (10 models)

    Fast Attack
    Raptors x1 w/ 2 Plasma guns, 1 Combi plasma.

If I run the above list, will it be battleforged? Will I retain my Night Lord legion trait of -1 Ldrship within' 6 inches?

If you want a Battalion detachment that is a Night Lords detachment then every model in the detachment must have the Night Lords keyword.

Is Be'lakor capable of having the Night Lords keyword?

The only way to use the Night Lords legion trait is if all models have the Night Lords faction Keyword.
