So i recently moved house amidst painting 9000 points of Space marine Lamenters. My friend who is a fellow ATC player has decided to give me a baptism of fire into the new edition which i have yet to dabble in. As my marines are in boxes and mid painting I have decided my first game will be with one of my old AM armies i have had for the last 10 years. These guys started as a 5th edition army so the tactics used seemed to be outdated but I find with guard there is never anything wrong with old tricks. The models have award winning paintjobs and I haven't had them on the table for at least 3 years so i have written a list based on WYSIWYG as it is the standard for our level of playing so I only have a few spare models to swap around. So here goes for a first time. Please give any input but be aware i am trying to convert an old list into the new edition without converting or repainting models. My opponent will most likely go Eldar or Slaneesh Chaos marines however he was primarily a Dark Eldar player.

Battalion Detachment (Cadian)

CCo: Powersword, Plasma pistol, Laurels of command

Commisar lord

Inf squad: Sniper Rifle, Lascannon
Inf squad: Sniper Rifle, Lascannon
Inf squad: Sniper Rifle, Lascannon

HWS: Autocannons

Vanguard Detachment (Catachan)

CCo: Power fist

MOO

Vet Squad: 2x Meltaguns
Vet Squad: 2x Meltaguns

Chimera: Track guards
Chimera: Track guards

Spearhead Detachment (Catachan)

Tank Commander: Executioner, HB, 2xMM

Russ: BC, HB, 2xMM
Russ: BC, HB, 2xMM
Russ: BC, HB, 2xMM

Hydra
Hydra

Wyrven
Wyrven

So basically turn Tank commander into command tank using Stratagem and march up the field with two Veteran chimeras to seize objectives, The MOO sits midfield with Inf blob and directs fire for Wyrvens. Russ Flank for support. Hydra and HWS either as Support or have as re-inforcements depending on first turn and deployment.

Unused models are
Aegis, Bastion and Skyshield
Russ: Demolisher: LC
Enginseer
Shadowsword
3x Valkyrie
Loads of men and at least 10 of every special weapon other than plasma (which seem to be a great option but never appealed in 5th edition) and Grenade launchers (which are now laughable).

Change the Vet x4 weapon squads into Cmnd. squads, and gain the BS increase.

MM sponsons on the L.R.s doesn't sound good in the meta I play in. Go HBs ... that said, a LasCan on their front panels will be better. I know that's a weird push/pull bit of advice, but the LasCan offers range over the MMs.

Sorry, I coulda swore there was a difference in BS. But, the real difference is in the veteran sergeant's leadership. The veteran's giving 1 better. And the Cmd. Squad being a 1 dude less ... so it is a matter of Battalion vs. Brigade ....

Numbers and ld over command. The vet sarg will have ld 8 as he is catachan and will be sent in with the second Cco. As for the russ, i will need to be agressive as all his weapons will outrange or equal mine. Nothing says yes like 6 mms to a wraithknight in the first turn. Compare that to 18 hb shots and the odds are he will still be standing. Same said for chaos landraiders and the like. Dakka will come from everything else. Between autocannons, wyrven and hydra i'm thinking anti infantry will be covered. This force is exactly 2000. I could consider swapping vets for command but probably for the extra 3+ sniper squads.

More lascannon would be nice too. But 60 points is hard to skim without making the rest of the elements even more average.

Shame you can't fit in a Valk or two, they can take alot of hits, and take the 2x rocket pods which are assault not heavy, so you can fly and unleash hell, with no negative BS.

-Me: Don't tell the commissar but i left my Imperial Infantrymans Uplifting Primer at home, but I do carry a folded Texas flag behind my front plate.
-Friend: Texas flag gives you AV14 all around.

Jury-Rig - makeshift repairs or temporary contrivances, made with only the tools and materials that happen to be on hand, the Machine Spirit is not pleased......

So he went a DE list of about the following with special army rules that gave one of his units the ability to fire out of sequence if they were within 7" of a destroyed unit. Needless to say dark lances and blasters were firing up a storm and his units were never away from another that they didn't receive fire support whenever i removed parts of his army.
2x Archon and 10 Guys in raiders
2x 10 Scourges
Jet bikers
4 Ravagers
2x 5 man units in Venoms

Anyway we decided KP as a starter game. Basically when he got the first turn i lost Tank commander a wyrven a Russ and I was wondering what was to become of my first game, but When things starts exploding that's when guard decide to go all out mad. I rushed forwards under covering fire of the Heavy weapons crews and last wyvren opened up into his Scourges, the Hydra decimated his vehicles and the remaining russ surged forward creating a distraction for his ravagers. He had 3 horrible turns of shooting as he watched a unit or two die each turn, in fact by turn 5 i still had most of my tanks down to between full to 1W, the gods had blessed my armour, or cursed his. I concentrated on destroying his transport knowing my infantry would be better facing final turns against Ravagers than rapid death splinter rifles. Having a veteran unit scooting up the side of the field in a chimera was great too, he popped the chimera then my camo paintjob came into effect and the squad and CCo hid for the entirety of the game saving me 2 KP. 1 Autocannon and a beat up wyrven were all that was left on the field but they too saved 2 KP.

In the end it was a draw with him getting First blood. We both gained STW. Quite and entertaining game and a great way to start 8th.

Today we rematch. an increase of 500pts too. I'm guessing we will be going for objectives so i have enlisted some air cav for the task, rather than using the shadowsword.

Basically the same list only moving the Hydra to the Cadian battalion and making the Wyrven separate units to take advantage of regimental rules more effectively.
Added a Wing Detachment, 3 Valkyries with HBs, they will be Valhallan for the Wound bonus.
I have added boltguns for the Veteran Sargeants as well as an extra meltagun in each unit as well as storm bolters for the Russ in the Spearhead Detachment.
