My parents cleared out their loft and found a lot of my old stuff up there. Including an entire Chaos Battallion box which was partially assembled.
The Khorne Bezerkers had been built and primed black.

I decided I'd get back into the hobby after... probably 12 years. So I convinced my wife that Chaos is the way to go and the we decided together to paint them. We now had to decide how to paint them. I didn't like red or black (which I think black is hard to do for a kind of beginner) so I thought maybe blue. I also wanted to go chaos undivided (as I also appeared to own some furies, and bezerkers and also want to buy the new dark imperium set to use the nurgle stuff).

So I decided on the Adhardon's Reaver's as there we no other lore based blue and silver chaos undivided people (there are also violators, but they're slaanesh).

So here is my first model painted as an adult... It lacks a bit of highlighting so far, but I'm quite happy with it so far. What do you think? I never really painted much of them before except when I was 12... which are now getting stripped!

Yeah lack of highlights but brush control is neat. Do you thin the paints?

Solid start though. And after that long pause can't expect to be heavy metal painter It's good level to start working on more advanced techniques though. And even now playing against it would be nice.

I do thin my paints with water. I started off with 1:1 paint:water (often recommended on here) but I found that was way too thin... so I guess it's more 2:1 paint to water. I don't mind doing the extra coats, but 1:1 started being more like a wash and would sink into crevices too much and cover unevenly... almost like it was pooling.

The leadbelcher paint I have is pretty crappy though. It was from a Citadel Essentials box set and looks like it's dried up or something. I'm going to replace that for the rest of my models.

When I was young I don't think I ever thinned my paints at all, so that is probably the biggest revelation and improvement I can suggest if no-one thins at all.

Once I complete the entire squad (they're nearly done to this level too) and then highlight them I'll post a picture. I've found that I have a 15 bezerker models and one which looks like an aspiring champion so I can use them as a nice Khorne detachment in battles, whilst keeping them separate from any future nurgle or normal chaos space marines.

To a degree, blue and silver is Alpha Legion colours.. commonly a dark blue like Prussian Blue with silver trim in the more simple paint schemes, though that's a whole rabbit hole of paint scheme ideas on its own.

As Alpha Legion are chaos undivided too I'd be happy to play as them as well ! I know we can use the "count-as" rule and it doesn't matter too much for colours in the real world... in my head I want my army to be fairly consistent. The touch of green in Alpha legion really makes them stand out.

I have no idea why I have 10 furies though... What made me buy them, I wonder.

I do have one question... what colour should I paint the eyes? I know I would normally paint a blue helmeted marine's eyes red as a contrast... but should the eyes of a khorne bezerker be red, or is there some other contrast? Green should work, yes? Perhaps black.

Cheers! I put nuln oil over the blue and silver bits, and agrax earthshade over the red and bronze. I then did a little bit of layering over the kantor blue bits with more kantor blue to try and get rid of a pool of shade I saw and just to brighten it up a little. I have hoeth blue and alaitoc blue to do some edge highlighting, but there's not much blue to highlight. I need to get some more leadbelcher (as said above my current pot seems a bit thick and has separated) and will get something lighter for the highlights on that too.

I had to replace all of my old paints, unfortunately. Most had dried or separated over the years.

Well, that is more then good enugh for the table.

Guess only thing left to deside is are you going to base them or not.

Yes. I definitely will be basing it. Even just a basic base (no pun intended) makes a model look so much better.

I'm thinking either a deserty sand base, or a ashen grey/black waste. Simple enough. A skull or two might look good two. I have plenty of spare heads and skulls from the Rhino that came in the box too. Although skulls are for the skull throne... not to be just left on the floor.

Looks really nice! Maybe throw a little silver on the edge of the brass to make it look all scuffed up and battle worn.

Actually, on the note of being a bit battleworn....

He does look a bit clean and fresh for a bezerker. Does anyone have any tips on giving it a more weathered look? Especially dust or dirt on the boots, and perhaps rust on the blade or even blood?

Are the specialist blood paints any good from Citadel?

If you want to give your Alphas a little more dimension on the colour, what you do is you look up a means to get some Golden Arts Fine Interference Green Fluid paint - the Fluid line is pretty smooth, the fine flake makes it very uniform.

Now what this paint does, is it's got translucent flake that reflects green when the light hits it just right. If you're using a dropper for your blue already then you're even closer to set, just mix the blue and the interference green and you're off to the races - I used 1/1 mix personally. If you paint it over, then you'll see the translucent nature more as it'll leave a faintly whitish coat over your blue.

Wow. This stuff looks amazing. I will have to paint up a test model first to see how it looks... if I can get hold of it.

yea it is allright. key is not to overuse it on the model. takes a bit of practise.
for rust, ryza rust is allso quite fine.


or you can try to learn to paint chipped armor effects. lots of guides on the subject both in here and in google.

If you're in a decently sized city, look for your artist supply stores, you'll likely find it there.
