Can some one please point me in the right direction of what to get for a Space Wolves army? Thinking of starting with either the Start Collecting box or grabbing some troops and fenrisian wolves, TIA

Get the start collecting and then grab a space wolf venerable dread! to build Bjorn.

Or grab 2 start collecting + venerable space wolf dread(make Bjorn) + 3 razorbacks and you have a great starting force!

Perfect advice right there.

3-4 squards of hunters + Razorbacks is considered a great 'core' to any SW list right now (at least till the codex drops). Mix in a wolf priest, rune priest from random bitz and you got yourself a 1500 army.

Okay sweet! I did read that from the start collecting box I can choose to make the troops 1 of 3 different choices?

The start collecting box has the following;

Wolf Lord on foot with all weapon options. (Could also be made to be other things with some conversion! or even on a thunderwolf)

3 Thunder Wolf Cavalry with all weapon options.

10 Space Wolf 'Pack' models. With whats in the box you can make 10 Grey Hunters, Blood Claws or even Wolf Guard (But you will lack some weapon options/numbers for them). Also if you can get your hands on Lascannons etc they can be made into Long Fangs. You'll even have enough bits to convert other models to be more wolf-like.

The only real difference is weapons and shoulder colours!

Personally I always magnetise Elites/TWC/Tanks.

I've had the most sucess with;
Storm Shields. Wolf Claws (hammer on leader)
Storm Shield, Chain swords

Some people keep one or two basic for absorb wounds etc.

The excessive amount of storm shields you can take are in almost every situation worth it. The space wolf squad boxes have some of the best bits. Rune priests will work great in the list and aren't terribly expensive points wise. Bjorn is one of the best HQ's in the game outside the ridiculous primarchs, and the Venerable dread with shield and axe is a great distraction carnifex with its 3++. You'll want razorbacks for your infantry especially if you take blood claws. Thunderwolves are a solid fluffy choice and are pretty efficient at chewing through hordes w/ either the wolf claw, frost sword or to really pack a punch give the sarge a thunderhammer and shield. Welcome to the pack!

"You are free, Leman Russ of Fenris, because your freedoms match the emperor's will. For each time I wage war against worlds that threaten the Imperium's advance, there comes another time I am told to conquer peaceful world's that wish only to be left alone. I am told to destroy whole civilizations and call it liberation. I am told to demand millions of men and women from these new worlds, to make them take up arms in the Emperor's hordes, and I am to call this a tithe, or recruitment, because we are all too scared of the truth. We refuse to call it slavery.' 'I am loyal, the same as you. I am told to bathe my legion in the blood of innocents and sinners alike, and I do it, because it is all that's left for me in this life. I do these things, and I enjoy them, not because we are morale, or right - or loving souls seeking to enlighten a dark universe - but because all I feel are the Butcher's Nails hammered into my brain. I serve because of this "mutilation". Without it? Well, perhaps I might be a more moral man, like you claim to be. A virtuous man, eh? Perhaps I might ascend the steps to our father's palace and take the slaving bastard's head"

Am I better of using thunder hammer or frost axe? I like the looks of both, also use a shield on all or chuck in some pistols? Thanks again

From my exprience and methematically, swords perform better than axes in most situations. But I personally like to keep a single hamemr in the squad just incase something silly needs to be killed.

On TWC I find any ranged weapons a little pointless and results in them being gunned down by mass fire of any kind. But a plasma or two wont hurt too badly if you want some extra TEQ hunting.

Magnetize the arms on the thunder wolf. It’s really not difficult. Get a 1/8” drill bit and a cheap pack of 1/8” neodium “rare earth” disc magnets. Start the whole with your hobby knife, and finish with the drill bit in your hand. No power tools.

Thunderwolves hold the shield (one of the options included in their kit). This edition all the melee weapon options are fun. Basic setup is fine as well.

The point is, it’s not very hard to magnetize units. Soace wolves benefit heavily from you taking the time do so it from the get go, as they have so many options. Every edition I would end up kit hashing more and more things together (still happens). Magnets are the way for SW!!!

I tipycally run them in 5 man squads, sometimes with one plasma gun if I have the spared points. But the stock min unit is already useful, now even 5 points (1ppm) cheaper. I mostly use grey hunters as screeners or objective holders.

Would I make it as one 5 man squad and a 4 man squad including pack leader?
