Pg 242 of the BRB has an entry about fielding understregth units if you can't meet the minimum model count, you just pay the points for what you can. Whats the general consensus on this in tournaments?

My thoughts are mainly for taking a single Hive guard rather than the minimum 3 for the unit to accompany my Swarmlord into battle.

This has been changed (or is about to change, I forget) to only be allowed if taken in auxiliary detachments.

How tournaments treat it isn't something YMDC can answer.

They errataed it. Read the latest FAQ for how it works. Basically you only pay the points for what you bring but "If you are playing a matched play game, you can only include an understrength unit in an Auxiliary Support Detachment.’"

So you can cheese all you want but it costs you a command point.

Most tournaments don't allow it around here at all
