I'm thinking about getting a Vindicator to add to my heavy support. I currently have a defiler, land raider, and two predators. I've never really considered using the vindicator until now. The cannon seems like it could put some hurt down range. But the very short range of it makes me wonder it it's worth the T8 vehicle.

I've used a Vindicator plenty of times, with mixed results. It's a very beefy vehicle for the cost (even better with CA!) and can take a combi weapon, so you can deal with assualting threats fairly easily with a flamer or plasma. Its cannon is essentially just a triple multi melta, without the extra wound rolls at half range. But you aren't going to be within 12" of what you're shooting, so whatever.
From my experience, a Vindicator is a GREAT tool to put off to the side and pot shot the big land raider/super heavy on the other team. Don't make it the center of your force, rather put it on the side of the battle to eat into their backline.
Also, protip: make that Combi a Combimelta. If something DOES manage to get within 12", 4 Melta shots is 4 melta shots.

Yep...completely mixed.
If you'e willing to put up the points, perhaps a combi-weapon and added Havoc Launcher (not sure if it can even take one) would help in it putting out more fire.
I have one simply because they're cool...and I did manage to shoot Mortarion in the chest with one once and almost killed him (he was wounded of course).

The range makes it pretty impractical to use IMO. Why not any obliterators?

Obliterators are to point heavy for me. I already run tight on points for dudes . My berzerkers run 171 pts per squad.

Use the move and shoot without penalty stratagem.

They can take a Launcher, which gives them some decent shootin'.

I already use Hellbrutes in my elite slots. I actually like the reaper auto cannon on my brutes.

Obliterators are super good. Even without synergy they do work on their own.

I'm pretty sure.that the.math hammer will show HB are a much better weapon than the reaper.

Or perhaps he just likes the reaper autocannons.
I will agree about Obliterators being pretty damn excellent.

Another thing to note is that youre probably playing world eaters. The enemy will have a much bigger threat FAR closer to them, so its not like a 24" tank is gonna be 'exposed' in that situation.

Also, like the Leman Russ and the Demolisher etc...the new rules have converted the Vindicator to more of a large-beastie killer than a "big template - swathes of troops" kind of gun. I think the demolisher cannon needs a slight re-work or some kind of additional rule, but it's better shooting at big strong things - or perhaps vehicle squadrons...moreso than troops or fortifications.
I would have liked to have seen something like an inverse cover rule for siege guns like the demolisher cannon, models in cover lose -1 to their armour save instead of +1. It would provide a cool "niche" for siege guns, which were made to break bunkers and heavily fortified positions.

Yes I'm playing WE. I like the concept of having some bonus for shooting at horde of dudes . The bonus it gets now is kinda not great, it goes from d3 to d6. I also realized that having a 135pt model that is basically designed to target big things is probably something that I could really use. With it being T8 it should have a higher survivability than other tanks.

That D6 isn't gonna kill conscripts sure, but that's what your Zerkers are for! But TEQ? You'll melt them like butter.

Yep, you shoot the Tyranid Warriors, the Wraithguard (though if you're that close..better kill them all), the Terminators, light vehicle squadrons or other tanks if you end up near them. The combi-weapon option is great because you can run a flamer for defense against charges, or bolters for cheap extra shots, the melta for dealing with strong units which wander really close.
Combine a combi-plasma with the havoc launcher and you can dump a small amount of decent strength shooting (and actually if those combined with your demolisher cannon could do some work vs. larger groups).
Also the Chaos Vindicator went down to 125 points with Chapter Approved - I think!
