What you have there is a very solid collection of Dark Angles for Warhammer 40K. If he didn't want to play Dark Angels, most of those models are compatible as normal Space Marines. That's a pretty sweet setup.

The Spaceships are for a game called Battlefleet Gothic, which is a game that takes place in the 40K universe. Those ships are potentially quite valuable, as far as I know they are no longer in production. The game is pretty neat however, and I think the rules are available for free.

You said 50ish ships? Do they all look like that? If you have some alien spacecraft that could be pretty exciting.

What exactly would you like help with here? Do you want to know what the models are? Do you want help getting your son started in the hobby? Does your son not want to start and you want help selling?

Need more information before we can help.

Thanks guys.

At this stage I believe my son is interested in starting to play. so with that in mind what would i need to get him?

Also some idea of what they are would help, looking in the codex, presumably the rules for each model doesn't help, half the things listed don't have pictures etc.

As for the ships there is a full rule book, markers and die, the other ships look like this but made up

And its about 50/50 between the 2 types without these been built.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

If he's gonna play, you'll need to buy him: Index Adeptus Astartes, Codex Space Marine, lots of dice and a tape measure.

The models you have there look to be (from the back left): a rhino, a predator, a landraider, 60+ space marines, a dark talon, 15 assault marines, a rhino, 6 bikers, 10 veterans, Belial, 2 psykers, 2 chapter masters, a chaplain, 3 dreadnoughts, 3 centurions, a command squad, 25 terminators and 12 devastators.

An extremely solid collection to start with. What I'd suggest is take your son down to a local Games Workshop with the picture of everything, buy the Space Marine codex and Imperium 1 index, and ask the guy running the store, or maybe someone who's just there looking around, if they'll help your son build a list. Once your son has a list, go back there another day with the models from that list and ask for a taster game.

Hope this helps.

That looks like you just looked at the first image, any chance i could get you to tell me what is in each of the images below that, there are several things not included in the first image.

And they are broken down into smaller groups that are easier to manage and associate for the uninitiated.

Thanks in advance.

Right, so image by image:
Image 1 - 15 assault marines
Image 2 - 3 centurions
Image 4 - Belial and 25 terminators
Image 5 - 10 veterans, 2 psykers, 2 company masters, an interigator chaplain and an assortment of command squad models
Image 6 - 59 space marines and 16 devastators
Image 7 - a land raider, a dark talon, 2 rhinos, a predator, 3 dreadnoughts and 6 bikers
Image 8 - 2/3 rhino sprues and a drop pod sprue
Image 9 - an assortment of used sprues
Image 10 - 30 new and armless space marines (their arms are probably on those sprues somewhere, some people like to base paint their models before they are fully built so they don't miss anywhere on the model)

OK, thank you, Now i just had a look at the warhammer store, they have a dark angels codex and i got some free rules pdf, given the books already in possession would i require anything else?

Just curious, What is the estimated value of this lot? in case he decides it isn't for him.

Ah, my mistake, the Dark Angels do have their own codex so you should be fine on the rules front.

As far as what this stuff is worth? Just an estimate but I'd think you could get £500 at least for the whole collection.

The 8th edition Dark angels codex just released this past weekend. It would be a good book to pick up. Other then that, you have all the books, and a strong start for a first army.

Regardless: I think the next thing you should do is try to find your local warhammer community, whether its a Games Workshop store, or a LGS it doesn't really matter. Most people would be more then willing to teach you and your son the basics. and 8th ed is a very streamlined rule set and should be fairly easy to learn.

as for what its worth: i think 500 pounds, is overly generous. Maybe it it was all either new in box, or very well painted it could be worth that. But as is, I'd say closer to 200 or 300 might be closer. That Doesn't include the value of the Battlefleet Gothic stuff, I can't give you a price on that.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Ok, im back. I gather this is called Battlefleet Gothic, at least that what it says on the box and book.

Is the pictured items enough to play it? And i have to say wow some of these are heavy.

If my son decided against it does it have a resale value?

Thats more than enough to play Battlefleet Gothic with sizable fleets on both sides. The resale value of BFG models can be quite high, a quick search through ebay should give you an idea.

For the Warhammer 40k stuff, if your son decides it's not for him then I would not try to sell it in a single lump-sum. You will get far less than if you ebay stuff separately.

Sell off the troops in squads. Tanks, dreadnaughts and other vehicles separately. You would be surprised at how close to retail this stuff can be bid to often times, even used.

The Battlefleet Gothic stuff is certainly worth a pretty penny. Up to about £10 a ship.

More than that, some of those are exceedingly rare metals, especially the larger ones, and to a proper BFG player/collector just the ships and related books could be worth more than the entire rest of the marine lots.

I'd have to go through it carefully to figure out ship classes, but those two fleets combined are probably worth over $2k+

I would agree. The Battlefleet Gothic gubbins is very expensive. Specialist Games are probably working on a new BFG game as we speak but those models should still retain value.

As an example, you can charge about £100 for an Emporer class battleship nib.

Update - just checked ebay and someone is selling the Planetkiller nib for £250, and I bet you that will sell!

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Very much for real. The specialist games lines and models were low-run and expensive in their day because of the metal nature, leading to considerable rarity today. If you were to sell them the best way would be as individuals after distinguishing the different ship classes (there are BFG centric forums that could help)

I'd definitely recommend giving Battlefleet Gothic a try though since you seem to have beyond everything needed, It's a lot of fun and one of the best specialist games GW ever produced

To be honest, I would sell those battlefleet originals, and if I want to play battlefleet I would buy third party models for a fraction of what I have won selling the proper GW stuff

I wouldn't even know where to start selling them, I'd probably end up getting ripped off.

But he has made it very clear he has no interest in it because none of his friends have even heard of it.

If there's no chance they are going to be used, then I'd put them up on ebay in squads of 5 and let them get bid up.
The models bigger than man-size (tanks, dreadnaughts and flyers, etc) I would put on individually.

If you try to sell it all as 1 big lot, then a lot of potential buyers will be cut out and those who do have the money will be less likely to pay a good price for them.

Ahhh. Yep
I don't know anything about BFG, but I would still ebay them since you can reach the whole world for potential buyers.

If it's anything like Man O' War, then you'll need to do a little research and sell ships that come in squads together for maximum interest. (In man o' war I believe squad sizes were 3 ships.) And you'd need to figure out which ones are flagships so those could be sold individually.

Oh, Man. I'm totally lost.

Got the DA codex and might as well be written in chinese. I have no clue how to help my son do an army list. Tried using battlescribe, what a waste of bandwidth. It assumes you know what everything is, gives absolutely no clue to those that don't.

I almost feel like there is some big secret that GW dont want to let out. Why for the love of god cant every model just have a picture and each weapon etc etc. Paid £25 for a book that doesn't even explain what half the crap is, i might now know how many points its worth. Still no clue what it is because its a line of text with no reference to what the models actually carry.

GW New Players No Help.

Yeah that felt better, any clues gratefully received. because for a company that wants to sell this stuff, they sure do fail at telling total new all the information in the rules and codex, its partial at best. and going to a GW store not possible only day I have free is sundays, and the nearest one 60 miles away is closed sundays.

The above is a link to a page with a listing of various weapons. If you click on a weapon, it should give you an article with associated information including pictures.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons_of_the_Imperium
This is a link to a different wiki page that goes through all imperial weapons, item by item, with pictures. It might be easier to scan through this to get a visual match to what you have to then get the name of what you're looking at.

At a glance, the picture of all your troopers (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DV_t7du_AH78GGJvGoQp5XCXG6w5YlI2/view) shows you have a bunch of guys with bolters (boltguns), and a slew of heavy weapons. The bottom two rows, from left to right are:
multimelta(?), missile, heavy bolter, lascannon, grav cannon?, grav cannon?, multimelta, heavy bolter
plasma cannon, lascannon, lascannon, heavy bolter, heavy bolter, plasma cannon, plasma cannon

Hope this helps a bit

Where do you live? There might not be a GW near you but there might be a hobby shop that hosts 40k games, you can usually find someone in there who is happy to help a new player get to grips with the mechanics of 40k.
