What are the top picks for a Warlord in a Tyranid army? The army that we own is swarm with a handful of big stuff with the Leviathan Hive Fleet. Obviously Flyrant is the best option, but what are some good alternatives from the Flying Hive Tyrant?

I don't usually pick a tyrant as my warlord. My issue with them is they can always be picked out and shot. An easy warlord point to lose.

Broodlords make good warlords in an assaulty swarm army.
Malanthropes make excellent warlords in a gun battery.

Neurothropes are also good, Characters with a 3++ that can heal themselves.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Neuro or Mala if you are not interested in the warlord trait.

If you instead want to get something out of it (and there are some really nice ones) then you must decide based on the trait, but tyrants are usually the answer.
The free rerolls of Leviathan for example are surely better on something targetable and with an invul save, which means tyrants.

The Jormungandr trait can go on a backfield malanthrope or neurothrope for ignoring cover saves. Nice combined with tyrannofexes and dakka carnifexes.

Swarmlord?

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Primes and tervigons are only good in specialised armies. The rest are al good.

Not really. All the bad parts of making a walking hive tyrant your warlord, with the addition of having a very mediocre fixed warlord trait (re-deploy the swarmlord before turn 1).

I use a Jorm Prime along with my Warriors list for the ignoring cover trait. It's a special case though. My other HQs are Neurothropes.

That does sound fairly naff actually.

I generally run a walk rant, quad heavy devourers for a silly number of shots - he is protected decently (outside APOC he has yet to die) simply by virtue of making it clear on the table that the effort required to kill him in one turn will cost my opponent the game.

There is a flying version with the same load out, and a fair few smaller gribbles, plus gene stealers diving headlong into the enemy, they simply lack the firepower space to handle a tyrant lurking nearby and providing only fire support

The moment your opponents call your bluff on that amount of effort "trick" your telling people it will never work again. HT got more durable. They are not THAT much more durable.

Yeah, one dev squad or predator tank with all laz cannons can kill a hive tyrant with a little luck.

4 shots, 3 hits, 2 wounds, 6 to 7 damage using dirty math. Get lucky at any point of the hits or wounds section and that can be 3 successful to wound rolls and up to 8-10 damage. If your opponent takes a dreadnought with dual laz as well then that should do it for the hive tyrant and they still have a majority of their army to use.

Having said that, I say broodlord if your running lots of stealers, Nuro or Mala if not.

Even worse if someone points a volcano cannon at the tyrant.

Neurothrope or Malanthrope are Best IMO, but you could do a HT if you have a combo with WL traits and weapons.

Ia a broodlord any good? Not the primary thing you want to kill with a swarmlord running about etc but is nasty in it's own right.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

Warrior Primes are trash IMO. a Broodlord is ok, but since he will be in melee quickly I wouldnt make him my WL.

Primes are great if your bringing a couple units of warriors. Warriors are surprisingly great. Full units are pretty damn durable and equipped properly can deal with a very wide range of threats.
