When Kutlakh awoke from the Great Sleep, he was both more and less than he had been, though his eye lenses now blaze with an unhallowed cold light -- a gaze that even his fellow Necron Lords cannot easily meet. In battle he is a terrifying figure whose gilded android shell is blackened as if by fire and bedecked in the skulls and bones of his victims. The once proud aristocrat and glory-hungry general has now become a nightmarish and near-silent monster, the corroded engrams of his mind driven only by a burning desire to destroy the living and re-establish the rightful supremacy of his dynasty. He comes equiped with a relic sword called the Obsidax and a staff of light. I love that description. For funsies I decided to build my own Kutlakh. All he pieces have been ordered and the last bits should be in my hands by the end of the day today. I intend to post pics of the project as I go. For starters the bits I will be using. 1 Lychguard/Praetorian model. Mostly you need a set of walking legs, left and right, as strait as possible, arms. a staff bit with the left hand on it in a good pose. [color=yellow]Some Age of Sigmar Khorne Blood Bound skulls on spikes bits. 1 Overlord from the CCB kit. Basically the Torso Assembly and the staff of light. You can use this head or whatever head you think looks most menacing. Warhammer Fantasy Emprie Flagallents bits - The Skulls on Chains, maybe some chains, and the femurs on ropes(?) bits. Unsure which ones exactly I will use yet.[color] [color=yellow]1 Lychguard Hyperphase sword (the one with the hand holding it at an angle - Far left). 1 Base. Probably from the Necron Over Lord kit (40mm) or a 32mm. The plan is to use the walking legs with the torso. The arms will be down on either side with the sword in his right hand out to one side. I will cut out the section of the staff with the left hand and fust it into the staff of light bits from the OL kit to get a left handed SoL. This will be held with the top mirroring the sword and the bulk of the staff crossing behind his back. Spikes with skulls will be added to the shoulders and maybe spinal column (depends on how busy it looks. Less might be more). The chains/bones/skulls will hang off the hip (again, quantities depend on busyness) and MAYBE off the shoulders. I want him stalking forward. Just relentlessly moving towards his victims. Terrifying and unstoppable.

If the style of the necron sword wasn't so very distinct, I'd try to suggest something more unique for the Obsidax.

You can make a great looking unique sword from the Ushabti models. Track down the one that looks like he's weilding a Klingon Bat'leth and go from there.

I like this idea and the story behind this guy - I've always wanted to make an awesome necron lord.
As said before, for the special sword you could try and use a tomb kings pharaoh sword (make it look like even older tech than the necrons already have) or one of the spiffy new thousand sons khopesh looking weapons from burning of prospero (the bits are remarkably cheap sold separately) if you wanted to order another set of bits I guess.
Or just keep the weapon the same and paint it like it's glowing with power.
Cool stuff, looking forward to seeing more pics

Ok here comes some pictures.
Here you can see all the bits I gathered layed out. I made the laft handed staff of light by chopping up one of the Lychguard staffs and the SoL that came with the overlord like I said I was going to. I also clipped out the extended shaft bit behind the Sword and smoothed out the bumps normally on it. It gives the weapon a very different profile. More of a Khopesh kind of look. It MIGHT be enough with a good paint job to make it stand out as a distinctly unique weapon. Unsure if I will do any other modeling to it yet.
A closer look at the SoL
The body assembled. First attempt. You might notice thats the wrong loin cloth for the legs I have. Yup. I wanted the longest cloth on the overlord. I did some adjustments to the bit to make it fit. After this I bent it a bit so it wasn't so over the leg.
Here is the (Maybe) final model.
1) I modified the head a bit. I got rid of the orb, smoothed out the central top cylinder it sat on, carved some head crest channels into either side of it VERY carefully with my knife, and clipped up a little bit on the bottoms. Now instead of the orb being all up on top of his head you can see the skull on the spike. Also he has a much more distinct head from other overlords.
2) He ended up with 3 skulls on spikes on his back. 2 hanging off chains on either side of his loin cloth, a femur and other bone hanging off the back of one hip and some added chains for future trophies and to help make the bits more unique.
Sorry for poor image quality. I wish my camera was better. Il try to get another real good shot of it later with better lighting.

Those skulls and chains really work great on that guy! He looks a lot more important than your average necron overlord that's for sure.
Also I didn't even notice what you did to the sword until I looked at it before, but I like how it looks cleaner now and that it kinda stands on its own as a sword. I like it at least.
The only thing I found when I used to have necrons was that in an attempt to make them more menacing, I tilted them too far towards the ground (looking down). It looks like you haven't done that here but I would put him on a piece of terrain a little higher if possible.
So far I really like this guy, he has a lot of character I feel is missing from the base overlord.

Wow, he's going to take up a lot of real estate on the table, but he sure looks menacing.

Another thing you can do with the swords to make them look unique is to make them double sided, this wasn't too hard to do for my destroyer lord:
To make the staff of light a little less unwieldy I just used the orb from the Lychguard scythes:
I like what you did with the head on this guy, he looks very savage.

The double sided sword I have seen before. It's so big. Looks better as a staff topper then a sword in my opinion.
The more I look at the Khopesh like sword the more I like it. The curve to the blade makes it stand out much more then a regular hyperphase sword.

You might also consider the xenophase blade from the Deathwatch kit, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to look necron in origin anyways.

The blade itself does look necron-y. But there is a lot of distinctly imperium crap at the bottom of it.
