Subject: Mobile Suit Skirmish - A Game of Mobile Suit Combat (Gundam)
1x MS-06 Zaku and 2x Type-615+ E.F.G.F. M61A5 main battle tanks (which are bloody lovely little kits!).
These kits 'are' available in Europe but I've only found them on eBay and they cost the same per kit as a single HLJ-bought kit with shipping. I reckon HLJ's the cheapest option.
Would be even cheaper if someone sitting on a stash of cash could order say ... 100x of each for resale to Dakka members? ,)

And, what anime series should a relative Gundam rookie watch, and in what order, to get into the proper spirit of things here?
Thanks!
My favorite all around Gundam is 0083 Stardust Memories. It's fairly self contained with some of the more high tech stuff without getting away from the original's grounded, military style.
08th MS Team is easily one of the best in the franchise and one of the best suited to adapting to a wargame.
The original series holds up but its quite dated at this point. The Char's Counterattack movie is excellent but isn't all that self contained if you're not a fan of the series before watching it.
People either love or hate Wing. It's over the top and angsty with a lot of style and iconic mecha designs. A lot of the hate is just that there's better, but for many people this was their first.
SEED is pretty good as a modern series. Unicorn has also been fairly popular.
G Gundam is one of the silliest/awesome options. It throws out any sense of military realism and just creates bizarre tournament fighter mecha to beat each other up.

Haven't read it through yet, but I skimmed over it and it looks very well done. They've even got it in print and device resolution versions.
Now, I've got questions - lots of questions!
1/144 scale models will work with 10mm terrain, right?
Best places for 1/144 Gundam stuff?
And, what anime series should a relative Gundam rookie watch, and in what order, to get into the proper spirit of things here?
Thanks!
You're welcome.
I've got no experience with the game but I can confirm that 10mm and N scale terrain and models will work with 1:144 scale stuff. You'll also see refferences to 1:160 and 1:150 all of which work fine with each other.
For 1/144 Gundam, Hobby link or Hobby Search tend to have the best prices especially if you're ok with slow shipping.
For Buildings, Dropzone terrain is good if you like cardboard. Affordable plastic buldings are avaialble under the "KiWarm" and "Outland Models" names on Ebay and Ali Express.
For infantantry if you're willing to use other brands, Dropzone Commander, Reaper Cav, Heavy Gear, Mechwarrior Dark Age Clix figures, Bablylon 5 (harder to find) and even various company's modern 10mm stuff could work.
For vehicles, there's the sources above for proxy/alternate models the previous poster's options and I think there's also some 3d printed versions also, though I don't recall where those are.

These guys are pretty much perfect for Zeon, but I have no idea who makes/made them ...
Damn your bones, Alpharius!
I'm supposd to be painting my Black Sun survivor family, but instead I'm spasming all over the Interweb in search of suitable Zeon troop proxies ... (1st world problems FTW!)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh!
Almost forgot the iconic (?) Magella Attack from Bandai!
Personally not a fan of the flying/emergency jettison turret, but YMMV.
A bit pricy (and very large, compared to the Type 61), but a lovely kit. (two in a box - but I can't find it on HLJ right now).
Other than the DZC stuff, I've actually owned & built everything I'm recommending here...FWIW ,)

Thanks for starting this thread. Gundam stuff is everywhere here, so having a game in which to use them is a perfect excuse to buy some. For my son, I mean. To build together, you know, bonding.
TBH, I didn't realise this was 1/144 when I was dribbling over it at Volks ... but I tended to dribble & drool a lot during the ten years I lived over there (as one does ... )

Also worth checking out is Amiami. They're very reliable and often have better prices than hlj. Their stock can be a bit tricky at times though.
www.amiami.com
Also, TakaraTomy/TomyTech's model train terrain is 1/144 scaled, has a lot of variety, comes precolored, and is generally reasonably priced. On the downside, finding a webshop with stock of them can sometimes be difficult.
There's also a model train company called Greenmax that makes full on N-scale plastic terrain models. They do prepainted and unpainted, if that's your thing.
Thanks for mentioning us! I was part of the playtesters/development team and this game means the world to us. Martin (the individual who led this effort and did most of the work), put his heart and soul into this edition. We are still working out the kinks for things that may not have been clear or not work as intended. So keep checking our forums for updates and errata!
Infantry is pretty hard to track down if you are trying to use the Bandai sculpts and can be pretty spendy (I have bought a total of 12 Ground War sets, 6 of each kind). But I am running a strange army that has tons of dudes, tanks and planes to represent a force from the Odessa operation.
If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them for you! Thanks again for bringing us up here on Dakka!
Oh, figured you guys might enjoy this. Working on getting all my Federation stuff built and ready for basing and paint, still waiting on 8 of my Ground War kits to come in from Japan. Found an eBay seller that had them DIRT cheap, but the shipping was pretty steep so I had to buy in bulk to make it worth it. I am prepping to start kit bashing my GM Ground Types soon as well using old Ez8 Parachute Packs and Beam Rifles, along with arms and shields from the newer Gundam Ground Types in the Ground War sets. Also ordered the much better looking Builders Parts EFSF hands for the kits as well. My least favorite part of the standard HGUC kits are the hands.
Oh! I forgot to mention, we are currently working on updating all the units from the previous edition to 2.0 rules and points. So don't be discouraged if you don't see something up yet, and we are hard at work playtesting new units like the Core Booster. Later this year fully updated source books for the various Universal Century factions will be up, and hopefully the Iron Blooded Orphans stuff as well. One of the forum members/moderators has been hard at work playtesting the IBO stuff!

IBO is pretty great, one of the best non-UC series around.
Personally, my favorite piece of Gundam media ever is MS Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. It condenses the Gundam themes in a short, easy to digest OVA series, and it punches right where it hurts.
Other than that, I love the designs on Stardust Memories, but I think 8th MS Team is far superior. Unicorn is very pretty and very stupid.

War In the Pocket, 08th MS Team and Stardust Memory are some of my favorites! Even though Kou's English voice actor makes him seem a bit like a cry baby it is very well done.
The ending to War In the Pocket was pretty sad... poor Bernie! I liked how it shows that there are "good guys" on both side of the conflict and that the Zeon aren't just mindless baddies.
I agree with you on Unicorn, visually it looked great (I still found the Unicorn Gundam design to be boring) but it wasn't anywhere near my favorite series. I actually enjoyed the two Build Fighters series more than Unicorn just for how creative they got with the mobile suits.
I haven't finished IBO yet... The second season got ruined for me by a bunch of spoilers and it kind of makes me not want to finish it since all the suprise factor is gone.
In other news, I can't wait to test out the Gundam Wing rules now that a new HG Leo has been announced for this year! The kit looks amazing.

Actually, Zeon troops are very easy to get. The K-9 Pack from Build Fighters includes a bunch of the Zeon troops from the Ground War set.
Also, you're using the old 08th Team HGs? Why not the newer HGUC releases? They're FAR superior to the old kits. There's also a new HGUC Ground Type Gundam coming out soon that uses the newer style articulation featured on the recent HGUC Ground Type GM and the recent Blue Destiny kits.
Great to see MSSk with its own thread over here. I noticed a few people wondering about points costs though.
We're still working on the Faction Books for Earth Federation Forces and Zeon. Aiming to have these available sometime in February or March at this stage.
Meanwhile, you can find pre-filled Stat Sheets, with points costs, for common EFF and Zeon Units here:

Ah, thank you for that info! I haven't looked at a lot of the Build Fighters kits so that is good to hear! I needed 12 Bloodhounds and T61s so thankfully it worked out I will end up with all the infantry I will ever need.
I personally like the old ones because they match the art of 08th MS Team better in my opinion. The ankle armor on the new kits leaves a very undesirable gap which is rarely seen in the show. The lack of articulation is fine for me since they are going to be mounted on bases in fairly neutral poses to make storage easier. Plus, with how simple the old kits are I can build half of a leg at a time so I can glue it and keep the glue hidden.
I spent a lot of time looking at the instructions for the kits online and the old kit matched my needs better. It will be getting a bit jazzed up with some newer parts (head, hands, arms and shield) but the simplicity of the legs was the real selling point. They will hold up to the rigors of gaming better and be less likely to shift or break.

Hm, that's a good point... I was thinking on getting some and do the same to them as if they were regular gaming minis (that is, gluing, basing, painting ), and maybe a great poseability is not that good a thing for that.
Plus, those are cheaper, too

That was part of my thought process too. If I am going to paint these mobile suits and base them, I want them to be as rigid as possible. If I was going to run them without permanent bases and paint that would be one thing since I would just use Action Bases and go wild with the poses, but I am going to be changing the colors on mine and they would look strange when everything else is based. Plus having the bases with the 120 degree and 180 degree markings on them will make gameplay that much more smooth.
Price was just a bonus. Those old kits were $7.99 a piece from USA Gundam Store. It made buying the Ez8s for the backpacks and weapons far less painful since $16 is very reasonable when you look at a similarly sized GW mini.

Those are good points for using the older kits. The new ones are very nice though. I would recommend just picking one up to build. I will say that I was never satisfied with the head sculpt of the old kit. Something about it always seemed off. The new one at least fixed that for me.
Someday, I'd like to see Bandai do an HGUC of the 08th Team Zaku. So far, that old HG is the only representation of it.
Zeon's aquatic suits had better be utter beasts in this game. Acguys should never be underestimated.
