Hey there folks,

Had a game last night, and although I won it, it was tourney prep, so I want to make sure I'm doing things right! If Magnus casts smite while near a Star Weaver (6W), and just a bit further are three Sky Weavers (3W each), and he gets 10 wounds off his super-smite (2d6 for Magnus), will the Star Weaver die, followed by 4 wounds to the Skyweavers, or will the Star Weaver die, and nothing else is harmed? I had already won by that point, so I didn't bring it up when he only removed the Star Weaver (the Skyweavers were his last unit alive before I tabled him), but I'd like to know for this weekend.

Thanks!

Unless Magnus' version of Smite says otherwise, no. Mortal Wounds carry over to other models within a unit, but not to other units.

Why on earth would it spill over to a unit you didn't target?

If Smite used a blast template, like older versions used, the other squads would have been clipped by the blast and taken wounds.

What kind of reasoning is that in a thread discussing rules for the recent edition?

Thanks! Just double checked, and for some reason I thought the mortal wounds were generated first and then each got distributed to the closest enemy unit. With damage being one at a time I thought that might cause spillover. Glad to see I got this cleared up first!

It is an answer to why someone might think wounds could spill over. It wasn't a suggestion for how to play it now.
I could reword it to be:
"In older versions of 40k, Smite could have used a template (like the old Devastator power). The other squads would have been clipped by the blast and taken wounds."
