Subject: Return of the Burna Boyz Party Wagon?

I wasn’t sure whether to post this in the rules or tactics forum - mods please move if necessary and apologies
If I understand the current rules on wound allocation from shooting correctly, there is no requirement for the models being removed from the unit as casualties to be the actual models within range of the guns of the attacking unit. So on the one hand, my opponent can remove whichever models he likes. On the other hand, I can kill more models than are actually within range of my guns. So if he has a massive conga line of troops, my guys are at one end and only in range of the model right at the end, but I score ten unsaved wounds, tough - that’s ten dead models.
If I’m right then I’m wondering if the old 6th ed Ork tactic of putting burna boyz in a battlewagon is due for a comeback. 15d3 auto-hits, anyone?

You can get 20d3 autohits. And this will be 3.33 dead marines in cover. Congratulations, you've just killed 43 pts of marines with 440 pt of orks. Now you should be more afraid of half of your 30 boy squad being removed cause someone sees one boy'z hair from his tank's antenna.
So, overall the concept might be back. But burnaboyz are not.

Tried it, doesn't work.
Burnas have too little shots, too little strength and no AP. 15d3 auto-hits per model only sounds good until you have spent all those points to get about one and a half shoota boy squads worth of hits or marine 20 bolters. At less than half range, that is.
Also note that you cannot fire overwatch from the transport and you cannot shoot if your battlewagon has models within 1" or has fallen back.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Even though the points cost does not work out to be efficient, this unit is great for targeting flyers. Auto hits on flyers is always good. The Str 4 and no AP is where this unit suffers.

If three units of burnas each roll a 3 for shots, you might have a chance to kill a flyer with them. S4 AP0 is not a profile that is dangerous to vehicles, no matter how well it hits.
As they currently are, burnaz are not especially good at killing anything, but are priced as if they were still wiping out horded in a single shooting phase and ignoring marine armor in combat.
Burnawagon were good because you could easily get 5+ models under the template, resulting in at least 65 hits. 15-45 is just bad in comparison.

If burnaboyz had regular flamers and were 2-3 points cheaper they would be viable. At the moment even in friendly games they really struggle to justify their presence.

Giving them D2 weapons in combat would also create a niche for them and fit the fluff of them using their burnaz to cut wrecks apart for looting.

Not to pile on, I also can't envision any scenario where a Battlewagon full of Burnas survived long enough to drive them into range.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.
