As much as everyone wants new and plastic models I still have a fondness for the old metal stuff. I sold most of my collections (I enjoy collecting, restoring (painting them to a better standard) and reselling when I want to repeat). Was wondering if anyone has made a list of all the old metal minitures that are no longer in production but were given rules in the latest index? In addition, how many metal miniatures from the 90s do GW still sell on their store?

I think most if not all of the old metal stuff has been turned resin. One of my favorite metal models was the 40k Daemon Prince and the old terminator lord.

Hope you're ready to do a ton of eBay hunting and digging through swap forums. Very few models are still made in metal, so you have your work cut out for you. In addition many classic metal sculpts are cast in resin now, so keep that in mind when shopping as well.

List of metal models (off the top of my head):

Made to order models. Only availible when a specific promotion is on. So far it's been several IG regiments (Tallarns, Mordian, Voystrians, Steel Legion, and Valhallans).

3rd Ed demonettes

Eldar psychers and a few assorted models.

For General production: Sisters of Battle, much to everyone's despair.

I love the metal models.

My Demon army is all metal, 450+ painted and another 100 or so left to paint. When I go to tournaments, I bring about 3 Army Transport bags worth of models. I do feel the weight of the army, and it just feels like an army.

I have a painted Tallarn army, 350+ models most of it Tallarn metal models. In addition, I have 50 painted Kasrkins that I take as part of the Guard army. I also have a 100+ painted Elysian force, but these models are lightweights. Lol

On my painting table I have over 150+ Sisters of Battle models. But these have been set aside, since the Demon codex came out and now painting more metal demons.

I've been collecting since 2002, and have many more metal models lying about and in storage boxes.

I'm a metal head at heart.

A lot of them have just been replaced, with plastic or resin, but are still valid. I've still got a bunch of old metal space marines: Death Company, Scouts, Terminators, Devastator weapons in metal, Chaplains and Captains etc.

That's why I mainly do characters or cool off things that they don't do anymore: Demonhosts for example. The idea of putting together an entire metal vehicles just sounds like a pain. XD

The metal landspeeder was some kind of sadistic Space Marine rite of passage back in the 90's. I love metal...but my love is limited to miniatures (preferably single piece).

I love the old metals, and I have my considerable weight in pounds of them, but I have to admit the plastics are easier and more amenable to conversions.

Conversions Conschmersions. There's nothing quite as satisfying as dropping a weighty squad of metal miniatures on the table. I remember a guy who had a 20 man unit of WHFB Black Orcs that almost caused the table to buckle under its weight.

GW's plastics all seem to have these ridiculous dynamic poses. How the h*** am I supposed to transport them anywhere? I need suitcase to transport a single army.

Metal models also have the added advantage of a secondary role as an improvised weapon or projectile if you are facing a particularly obnoxious opponent.

I've played 2nd edition, a bit of 3rd and then made the jump back into 8th.

I have to say the detail on the modern plastic models is much better. Also I prefer the modern plastic models as you can glue them together better with polycement or plastic glue. I have trouble sticking some plastic arms onto metal bodies sometimes, whereas with all plastic there are no issues.

I prefer the weight of metal models though. My old style 2nd ed Space Marine Dreadnought and Carnifex weight quite a bit, but can even be a bit top heavy.

I have an old metal great unclean one, pretty sure it could be used as cannon artillery.
Must admit though, I prefer plastics...

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

I refuse to use any non metal eldar for my army aside from kits that don't have metal options (like wraithknight/vehicles) Im at around 5k points of glorious metal now

Hah. I have over 100 metal Space Marines for my Blood Angels army. It is glorious to set my case down and hear the table groan.

Oddly, the detail on many figures is not better in plastic. Many of the plastic sculpts became better, but when you compare a properly done metal sculpt, the detail is no different from a plastic miniature. Now, the old and ubiqutous plastic arms/backpack sprues were terrible, but the metal Space Marine bodies, and Eldar etc. are still fine (the metal Space Marine scouts being far superior to the later plastics). Undercuts on metal tend to be far more crisp/sharp than plastic miniatures, which does aid in painting and particularly dipping.

The entire Dark Eldar line was garbage, but they were crap sculpts...so it had nothing to do with the material. So in the hands of a competent sculptor there is little to no difference. I will say that models were a lot less busy in the metal era, though you had some later models which started the "detail creep" which is so common now.

I do think a lot of vehicle details became better, because it was simply tough (or so it appeared) to sculpt giant slabs of metal with the same consistency as smaller miniatures. My Eldar army is metal miniatures wherever possible, yet plastic for vehicles and Wraithguard.

Looking for OOP metal models with current rules, I'm not sure how to help you.

That said, I recently ordered a squad of Wyrdvane Psykers and a Primaris Psyker for my IG and was surprised to find that to receive them in pewter. It's kind of a nice change of pace after working on some less-than-stellar resin stuff (Finecast AND Forge World), really. That said, they're the kind of sculpts that would have lent themselves well to Finecast anyway...ah well.

It also seems that some of the made-to-order stuff they've been doing recently is metal; the kneeling Eldar Ranger I got, for example, was in pewter.

Yeah hah, a single foam tray ripped darn near in half when I accidently didnt pick up the tray with two hands! Worth it though, they may be old and out dated, but the weight of them is something resin crap cant compete with!

Most of my armies are still all metal. Demonhunters, Witch Hunters, Eldar, Demons, Necrons, and over 2000 metal guardsman between all the armies they released.
