Hi!

I collected a Thousand Sons army for Warhammer 30k, but there's an escalation league for 40k in my local area. Most of the points are for varied forms of beating your opponent in the face, but there's also points for painting (and a bonus for most painted during the, well let's just call it what it is, tournament). I'm still in the process of painting a bucket of marines.

Unfortunately, as I discovered on the forums here, there's not a lot of carryover from 30k into 40k for the Traitors, especially the Thousand Sons.

That's not the only problem; I really don't like the look of those Chicken Barbarian Tzaangors. I don't mind what they do, I just don't like how they look.

Also, I am fast running out of storage space at my place, so I want to buy as little as possible. And since I have an 8-5 regular job, and go to the gym so I can snack at work, I don't have a lot of time to be buying/painting new things; I'd like to use and finish what I have if possible.

Here's what I got (that can be used in 40k):

1 Box of Rubrics (soon to include bits for 4 Aspiring Sorcerers. Planning on at least 4 Warpflamers) (unpainted)

40 Bolter Marines (5 painted, rest are WIP)

3-4 Marine Praetors/Centurions with Plasma Pistol and Power (Force) Sword (WIP/Do Over)

3 Grey Knigh..I mean 3 Sorcerers in Terminator Armor (WIP)

14 Terminators with Swords (could be Scarab Occult easy), including 4 Scarab Occult Terminators. 1 Aspiring Sorcerer in Terminator Armor. (1 Painted, rest are WIP)

Ahriman (Unpainted)

17 (Unpainted) Kairic Acolytes with Pistols and Brutal Close Combat Weapon.

2 Rhinos (Unpainted)

1 Predator with Twin Lascannon and Heavy Bolters. (unpainted)

Contemptor Dread? I'd have to get the Forgeworld rules. (WIP)

So, that's what I have. Any suggestions on what to make with these with buying as little as possible/get as much painted before the end of the tournament? Obviously, I'm probably not going to beat face here, but what can I make that I can reasonably do well with if I try?

And before you say cultists, they ugly and they're out of stock everywhere so the closest I could do would be to use Guardsmen as "Counts As" cultists. And I probably wouldn't get around to finishing them before the end of the tournament.

I know I'm being a little finicky here, but I want what I want, I want things finished, and I'm not about to rent a storage unit for more minis.

I really can't offer advice for thousand suns, but I approve of your motivation to hit the gym.

Ahriman, 2 termi sorc, 3 squads of rubrics, one squad of SoT and some vehicle can make for a tournament level list easily without the help of anything blue skinned.

The only model i would buy is a demon prince.

+1 for the deamon prince, and MAYBE a defiler if your looking to buy something else. Otherwise you have a solid core there. You can look at running the marines as rubrics, and it sounds like your force is already considerably larger than most infantry wise.

Best list I can figure for this:

HQ: Ahriman
Sorceror in Terminator Armor, with the Dark Crystal Relic

Troops: 20x Rubrics including as many warpflamers as you care to build
Troops: 10x Rubrics with 1 soulreaper
Troops: 10x Rubrics (you don't have a second soulreaper, but if you did, one goes here)
Run your praetors as aspiring sorcs with Force Swords and Plasma Pistols
Troops: 2x 10 Cultists, just to form a deep strike screen. These are your Kairics.

Rhinos for the 10x squads

10x Scarab Occult with Hellfyres and soulreapers

Predator (2x las and 2x HBs is pretty bad, but its OK)
Contemptor with 2x butcher cannons (autocannons)

That'll give you a decent list with no buys, should be roughly around 2k (I didnt do the math). Ahriman babysits the gunline, termie sorc drops in with the blob and warptimes them into soulreaper range (or warptimes the scarabs if youre against a highly melee-averse army like Tau where the scarabs will be a big threat).

Best buys for the list: Defiler, Daemon Prince with Wings, magnetize the pred to have all lascannons because you need all anti tank.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

While the Heavy Bolters are glued in, the Predator has some black paint on it that I need to strip, and I have the Lascannon options. I've heard Super Clean will strip and weaken Super Glue bonds, so I'll do that to get the Predator to have more Lascannon.

There are a lot of cool FW vehicles that can be used for 30k and 40k. Fire raptor is especially good.

Man, it's hard to say if 1k son troops are worth it. They're only around 8% more durable vs heavy bolters and asscannons than tactical marines unless you can stick to cover. And are whooping 40% less durable than tacs vs ap3. And if you're building large squads, you want them to be up there wrecking face with those overhyped ap-2 bolters and flamers, so forget about cover. It only works for the defender in 8-th.

What's really good is Ahriman. This guy is a must have for the points. Daemon princes are great. Also, Scarabs are not half bad but they're still slow and easy to kill termies. Their damage output on the drop vs elite infantry is okish though. The problem is you might not find their ideal targets in the opponent's army cause at competitive levels you're most likely to meet screens or vehicle spam. Or vehicle spam with screens.

If you really want to play without bird persons, i'd probably still not fall for taking large 1k son squads as they're super expensive for what mediocre damage output (per point) you get.

However, just for fun, you could try running flamer squads in rhinos. Supported by scarabs, sorcs and probably something like lc+hb helbrutes or daemon shooty engines to sit on objectives, they could be interesting for a semi-competitive game.

All in all, i'd just forget abot top tables and competitive tourneys and have a ton of fun with whatever cool models you happen to like there. And those power-armored tomb dust mummies sure have plenty of sweet-looking models.

I would run Ahriman, 2x Daemon Princes and some Rubrics with Rhinos in a T Son Battalion Detachment, and any Rubrics on foot as Black Legion with a Tzeentch Chaos Lord or two.

Black Legion allows the Rubrics to advance and shoot. Yeah, they become less potent spellcasters... But how often are you really going to try your luck casting with Rubrics anyways? A bad roll has them blowing up.

You can also model some Rubrics with heavy weapons as Tzeentch Havocs to get access to some decent heavy weapons with rerolls from the Lords.
