Ok. I haven't got much experience in 8th edition, but since TS got a new codex, I am working on a new army.

Battalion +3cp

HQ
1) Ahriman on disc of tzeentch (death hex, warptime, weaver of fates) - 166
2) Daemon Prince with wings (gaze of fate, diabolic str) - 180
3) Sorcerer in terminator armour familiar(prescience, gift of chaos+dark matter crystal) - 140

Troops
1) Rubric marines AS+8bolter+soulreaper (temporal manipulation) - 220
2) Rubric marines AS+4flamer (tzeentch firestorm) - 159
3) Cultists 10+flamer - 49

Elites
1) Helbrute fist+twinlas - 162
2) Scarab occult terminators SOS+4combi+soulreaper+missle rack - 238 (glamour of tzeentch)

Heavy Support
1) Defiler scourge+twin HB - 169

Dedicated transport
1) Rhino combi bolter - 72

Super Heavy Auxiliary Detachment
1) Magnus the Red - 445 (doombolt, weaver of fates, infernal gateway)

Points [2000]
CP - 5

I want it to be TS legion army, so I was trying to avoid the goats.
The idea is to send a big unit of Rubrics into the webway to support the SOT drop. The small unit of flame Rubrics will be a flexible 2nd echelon in a rhino.
Is this list actually playable to some extent of efficiency?
And I am still not sure about Magnus, but can't figure out what to take instead of him.

In my mind too many toys, not enough bodies.

You've spend nearly half your points on Magnus and the HQ, leaving you with very few warm (or cold) bodies. Similar the Hell brute and flamer Rubics are relatively expensive for how durable they are, again reducing the resilience of your army.

Personally I'd drop the Sorcerer, Helbrute and the flamer rubics, for some regular Rubrics (mounted or dismounted) and maybe a Mutalith (so many tactical options, especially for supporting the teminators).

Magnus is still great, but not sure he adds enough to this list to justify that amount of points in one model. More Rubics, Scarabs or Demon Engines would definitely help with resilience.

I'm reaching day by day to the belief that Magnus is (unfortunately) mandatory if you want to play anything else other than codex: goats. If we choose to go the elite way, our spells have to go through. No other choice. If our tests fail, we die AND we don't have enough punch to kill stuff. So our spells have to work. And Magnus can make it happen. Not only because of his +2 to cast and 4 powers, but also for his aura, which is what allows our sorcerers to escape Perils half of the time and turn a stupid 4/1 result into a 4/3 and that's really all the difference in the world.

Not to mention that -and this is something most people do not talk about- Magnus is ridiculous in close combat. Like really really stupid. He will outright kill a land raider from full to zero in a single round and he can be very mobile too.

Of course he will require every single last bit of defensive spell you can cast on him and then he'll probably still get pretty mauled in the first round. Guy has definitely the biggest bullzeye forehead in the game. He really really needed a different warlord trait (-1 dmg taken would be my go to). But even half a Magnus is a real beast.

Magnus is too much of a liability and therefore not worth devoting 435 points of your army to field him. Yes, if you go first he will likely get
His points back, but that is a coin flip. So 50% of the time, he is just going to blow up before you get to use him. You are better of filling his spot with cultists and other such units. I would probably take him if they didn’t nerf his super smite, but they did and it makes him significantly worse.
