Subject: Is LVO worth going to if you're there just to have fun?

So, as some or many of you may have noticed in my signature, I don't play competitively. I play just for the fun of the game (mainly a hobbyist). That said, I'm considering going to LVO next year just for the fun factor.. I honestly doubt I'd win many if any games (though I will play), but to see all the amazingly painted models, the different kinds of armies going up against each other, etc. It just seems like it'd be fun.
So, I guess two questions for those who have been to LVO... 1) Is it Swiss or Single/Double elimination and 2) is it worth it to go just for the fun factor?
Thanks in advance!

It's Swiss, and yeah, not just for LVO, but tournaments in general, you'll find that there are many people going with no intention of winning the whole thing.
Don't worry about the "tournament" part of it, think of it like playing six games of 40k over a weekend and meeting new people who share your hobby. After all, that's what it is.

I had a lot of fun in the narrative event. Got to switch up your lists and was a 'for-fun' event.
In the end, I don't think I'm much of a tournament player. Playing the exact same list 3+ times in a row (or 6 in the case of the LVO) isn't exactly my bag.
That being said, I did play in the championships as orks in 2017, and it was quite fun. I found that at the mid to low level tables I found myself on (the 'kiddie' tables), everyone knew they weren't going to win the event, so everyone just had fun.
And there's nothing wrong with the casual tournament, or just show up and play the 'friendly 40k' tables.
So, in the end, I'd say yeah, it's worth it go and just have fun. Vegas isn't really even my kind of town, but there is great food and shows and the like. And the event itself is quite reasonably priced, like $120 for the weekend, but there's travel and lodging and food too.
I've been twice now, and I expect to go again next year.

I played at NOVA last year and also do not consider myself a competitive player (in fact, I'm fairly certain most of the competitive players on here find my attitude repulsive).
Even so, I enjoyed it. I got to play a lot of games, only one or two were spoiled, and the general hobby atmosphere was fun. I would say to definitely go if you can.

No. You're just going to get bullied by both the participants and the people running it.
It would probably be one of the worst experiences in gaming you'd have.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Are you okay with games going to time rather than finishing? Tournaments are having an issue right now with huge armies and slow play. If you're okay with having a two and a half hour game go to turn 3 or 4 every second round or so and then time is called, then you'll enjoy yourself.
Hopefully this issue will be fixed by the next LVO and sooner for tournaments in general. There's already talk about lowering the army sizes and putting in systems to combat slow play.
|
Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

There's typically several 40k events at big conventions. Try to get into a narrative campaign or other casual event, and play in that.

To be honest we are the ones talking about it, FLG seem to have made up their mind on the issue. I'm just trying to get them to question their assumptions, such as the vast majority of players prefer 2k, which thus far does not appear to be true. I don't think the majority of people care about points totals as long as everyone is operating under the same limitation, they just want to bring a decent sized army and have a fun time. So trimming some points off of the end seems like a low risk way to speed up the game, no one threw a fit when we moved to 2k from 1850, and I don't think there would be a big outcry going from 2k to say 1750 (1500 might be a tough sell though).

Some people will always complain that they "can't fit everything" in less points but thats the whole point of list buildings. Having to make choices.

Because his army didn't meet the 3 color and based standard and instead of accepting that and leaving in good grace he got really combative and had to be escorted out.

So they had a huge event with a massive problem of games going to time including games with an hour or more spent for one player to deploy and finish their first turn and they're keeping the points values at 2k?
I pity the people scrambling to enter all the match results for the games that go to time before the new round begins.

They had a 30 minute break between rounds so there wasn't much scrambling. Also the way BCP works each table enters their own score, so yeah.

The solution they've decided on is implementing chess clocks, so the person who chooses to spend an hour contemplating their deployment is going to run out of time and lose the game.

Yes.
Tournaments don't just have WAAC and hyper competitive players. You have FAAC players too, that just want a few days of Vegas (in this case), wargaming, and fun.

I would say that it’s BETTER to go to LVO if you just want to have fun. Because it’s the “competitive” players who are most hurt by (and the source of complaints regarding) the shortcomings of the tournament/ITC format. If you go to play some game and enjoy Vegas you’ll have much more fun than someone who goes to play in “the premier 40k tournament of the world!” and finds that it’s not all that.

This was my experience at NOVA as well. The kerfluffle about this and that (I forget what but there was something or another that caused shenanigans) didn't really bother me and I had a blast, because I had exactly 0 chance of winning, I went into it knowing that, and made a point to have fun! An example of it is e.g. buying a drink for every single opponent after each game.

The LVO and Vegas are great fun and you will have a great chance to meet lots of nice people with incredibly looking army's and miniatures.
I have gone twice and plan to go next year again and i am pretty bad at 40k so that tells you how much fun i have each time.
With love!
