Subject: Shadow in the warp?

Shadow in the warp is well known, but how would it actually work? Are there any rules about it (e.g. fluff-wise would a single tyranid warrior or zoanthrope be able to cause shadow in the warp in an entire planet)? And if not, how would the larger swarms get the effect? Multiple powerful psychers, the hive mind willing it or a specialised organism? Also, would genestealer cult patriarch have shadow in the warp, as from what I have read he is also linked to the hive mind. Any other thoughts, questions or explanations of the shadow in the warp would be appreciated.

There is really no such thing as a single warrior or zoanthrope. Outside of a few edge cases tyranid organisms are not built to survive for very long. They are designed to live for hours or days at most. They don't have the biology to keep feeding and sustain themsevles. The shadow blankets entire solar systems when the hive fleet shows up. It intensifies on the planet as the fleet gets near it. Even a few days or a week out from the nids actual arrival weaker untrained psykers go mad and die from the shadow before a single tyranid organism ever makes planet fall,

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

The hive mind is a bit unknown. Most that is put in the codexes is put in the from the perspective of non tyranids.
The shadow in the warp is the effect that the hive mind have on the warp, the plane that lies pararell or coresponds to the material realm most things exist in.
Are you asking about the shadow in the warp phenomenon or something else regarding the hive mind?
There is a great foreshadowing (no pun intended) in Dawn of War 2, a very fun game. The eldar's know's what is up, but the imperials are not all so well informed. (For anybody who saw the extended trailer know's it is the nids.) This clip does not do the game justice, but Cyrus is waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The nids being utterly alien would loose a lof of the mystery if they turned out to have human like thoughts or feelings. And in being to alien they would be very reader unfriendly.
The Ukraine author Stanislaw Lem often tryed to depict utter alien thoughts we do not understand. Buth STALKER and Solaris are good examples of this, and they where both made into films by Andrej Tarkovskij. I would like to see Takovskji or Lem's take on tyranids. But I would not like to see one of the inhouse GW authors do this unless they come up with a good idea themselves. It could very well undo the mystery that is tyranids.

Well said - just thinking out loud. Cheers!

The Shadow comes from the sheer amount of thoughts buzzing between all the Tyranids.
Think of it like trying to talk to your friends on a radio but every frequency is hundreds of people screaming at each other.

tyranid prespective is seen in Devestation of Baal and I thought it worked pretty well.

Haven’t read that one. What’s the general vibe of tyranid thinking?
