Hey

After a 22yr absence, Whats with the lieutenants?

Have they replaced the veteran sgt, do they have access to all wargear?

Are command squads worth using or just select characters to attach to units?

cheers

Lieutenants were added to the 8th edition Index and codex for most marine armies. They are seen in a lot of lists due to their ability to reroll 1's to wound.

They have access to a ton of wargear and options, they are similar to what a captain can take.

Command squads are in a weird position. Most of the time a Vanguard Vet squad can do their job better (melee wise). I feel like they shine when taken 2 or 3 of them in a squad to get a quick Vanguard Detachment. I like to use them with storm bolters and chainswords.

8th removed the ability to attach characters to units.

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

One should note that the lt doesn't re-roll rolls to wound of 1, he creates a 6 inch bubble allowing things from the same chapter to re-roll ones to wound within 6 six inches of himself, [Including himself.]

They're slightly worse statlined than Captains, [BS3 instead of 2, one less wound and attack, if I recall] with pretty much the same wargear options. They occupy a HQ choice, and if you're weird, you can take two for only one HQ choice for no apparent reason.

Command Squads are the sux, really. Medics and Standard bearers are now independent characters who do their own thing, and as the above poster noticed, characters can no longer be attached to squads, but they also can't be shot unless they're the closest target. [They can still be assulted and mind powers though.]

Lieutenants are like an alternate Captain, and bring a complementing ability. I always bring both and double-bubble my surrounding units. Captain allows re-rolls of 1 to hit, LT. allows re-rolls of 1 to wound.

You can upgrade your Captain to a Chapter Master, in which case you re-roll all to hit rolls (which basically amounts ro re-rolling 1s and 2s). This is something I always do, to.

Yeah, the LT really goes well with a Captain.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Can the Vet Sgt be substituted for Lieutenant?

I currently have the metal vet with bolter and aux grenade launcher

A Space Marine is a Space Marine, as long as the model has the appropriate wargear there is no issue.

Yeah that should do perfectly! Anyone that looks particularly veteran-y that stands apart from the rank and file makes a good choice. I don't tend to use Chosen with close combat weapons, so one of my Chosen with a big Power Axe is my go-to for an Exalted Champion, which, like the Lieutenant, is a unit without a model.

I don't think Lieutenants have an invuln save, which could be worth mentioning.

Yeah they don't. Another thing is that artifacer armor is no longer a thing. If you want a character to have a 2+ save it's termy armor or nothing, and Lts cannot take termy armor (a shame really)

Say what?

I have the old UM captain too with the really short power sword (the one sicarius is modeled after) who is wearing artificer armour,

What would my options be for him?

Check out the Talon Master for Dark Angels - best Lt in the game.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

It just counts as a really fancy-looking suit of power armour. Certain units and special characters get armour with a 2+ save like Honour Guard, Sanguinary Guard, Tycho, Dante etc but it is not available as an upgrade you can buy anymore. Either a unit gets it as standard or they don't get it at all.

Well you could use it as the Relic Armor Indomitus, which does give a 2+ save. Not the best use of a Relic, but not bad either. If you're actually using Ultras, then you can say his armor represents the Sanctic Halo, which gives a 3+ invuln and can deny a psychic power. That's a pretty sweet one, imo.

That old UM captain is hot. Love that guy.

There is a relic called Armour Indominatus which you can give to your Captain in fancy armour.

There is no offical model for a SM non Primaris Lt.

[Wut? No Model no rules GW? HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?]

So you're free to use any stand-outish space marine. He does come stock with a master crafted boltgun, so the model you pictured would work perfectly.
[I specifically use old rogue trader boltguns on my Lt's, because in the imperium, older is better!]
