From what I remember, not that long ago $50 kits were released that had 1 transport and 1 squad of troops for most armies. These sets had good value to them and felt like a good step in-between regular kits and start collecting boxes. But now, I don't see these kits anywhere. What happened to them?

I don't think they are actively produced any more. You do see them someitmes in stores. I think the various starter boxes (know no fear, Dark Imperium, ForgeBane, etc.) have replaced them.

I asked this question at my local GW a few months back and was told they've been discontinued. Shame too as they were good value

They were what is called a "Splash Release", wherein there is a limited amount of them made and once the stock is depleted they will not be actively replaced.

That's unfortunate. They were good army boosters, especially for the price.

No. The Start Collecting sets came out years in advance. These were sets intended to go alongside of some events that they ran in GW shops.

I didn't realize these were discontinued. My FLGS still has a bunch of them on the shelf for the different marines. Maybe I should pick them up at some point then....

There is still one of these Skywolf Wolf boxes on the shelf at my local. The one with the Drop Pod and Wolf marines?

I want to buy it just so I can say I saved some money but... Then I have Space Wolves...

I think the reason GW stopped making these boxes was because they found the person responsible and had them flogged to death.

GW seems to put out these types of splash kits periodically. Troop Transport boxes here. Battleforces there. Seems to be a way of padding out the release schedule.

I'm surprised these kits are still for sale in some FLGS - they haven't been on the GW website for several years!

I kind of disregarded the latter, because, compared to the former, I thought they were terrible value!

Third wave of them actually...not sure why you thought they were terrible value since it was exactly the same thing as before, with the savings being similar/the same.
