Subject: New player couple questions about space marines

I use to play a long time ago and I am trying to get back into the game was wondering if there is a website that can lay out all the loyalist & traitor factions of the space marines and how they differ in stats and abilities. I was leaning towards Bloodangels than I saw flesh tearers, salamanders, emperor children, world bearers or iron hands and became curious how they all differ. Thanks for the help! Also do I have to buy the 8th edition codex or can I get away with an earlier edition?
Thanks!

Past codexes are not compatible with 8th edition. You will need either either the Blood Angels, Space Marine, or Chaos Space Marine codex depending on what you decide to do. While the base marine is more or less the same, each chapter has different bells and whistles. The Lexicanium will tell you the stories behind each chapter. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

Awesome I think I found it:
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000_8th_edition#Astra_Militarum
I will read this over and narrow it down to a few armies. Anything I should look out for or steer clear of? I want something diverse that can keep up and won't get knocked around.
edit:
Ok, I'm about halfway through the list and this doesn't give me alot of insight. Can someone recommend something that lays out each space marine faction pros/cons etc...?

You’re almost there fella, but try this link:

This is the page specifically for Space Marines and goes into more detail. You’ll be able to find similar pages for Chaos Space Marines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Death Guard and Thousand Sons, all of which have their own Codexes. So I narrowed it down to salamanders or blood angels & alpha legion or emperors children.
Can you guys give me some examples of the play styles for 8th edition, I purchased the Imperium and the Chaos space marine codex but they won't be here till Monday.
Also where do I buy figurines that are specific to these chapters or do I just by space marines and paint them green or purple?
Thanks!

Utilizing Careful Highlighting
|
Salamanders don't really have their own range, save 1 character. Blood angels have an extensive model range in their own right, which can be found on the Gamesworkshop site.
There isnt really a dedicated model range for the emperors children or the alpha legion. The EC make a lot of use of noise marines, which have their own models, alpha legion not so much.
Generally you just paint your marines the colour of the army you want, or feel free to make up your own colour scheme, it has no effect on the rules.

You can absolutely do that. These are your dudes, you can either paint them in the colors of some existing chapter (some people love to make armies accurate to the slightest detail), but a lot of players invents their own chapters, especially if they don't like the history of existing ones, and goes wherever they want from there. If you like a color scheme, heraldry, or just want to have unique army, there is nothing stopping you, and only an idiot would complain your Salamanders or Ultramarines are purple or green.
As for chapter specific units, don't worry about them. Most of core units in SM armies are interchangeable, and these that aren't tend to be specific, advanced, harder to use stuff. For now, make basic force (Dark Imperium marines are good way to do it for cheap), test rules of various chapters you can find in the book, and see what playstyle you like the most. Once you decide on one, then you can round the force with well suited units. For starters, a HQ model and a few troops would be best to learn how to play/paint and can be used in whatever army you design later, and won't make you regret buying them as might be case with something more specialized.
