So, I was wondering how a GoT style 40K TV show would do. It's got political drama, plenty of stuff to kill and kill with, a casual disregard for sentient life, and more.
Considering 40K can easily hold almost anything, what...
1. Setting would you use? Imperial world? Hive world? Follow an IG regiment, or a Rogue Trader? Political intrigue in a governor's court? Gangers? A mix?
2. Any stand out actors/actresses?
3. What themes would you use/combine?
4. What would you use to add color, for when the audience gets used to "the status quo"? Visiting Guard regiment from a vastly different culture for example.
5. Sample episode plots. What would you like to see come up for a episode or so? Local inquisitor having to deal with a rival sect/more or less radical inquisitor arriving for example, or Governal wedding, or missing Sister Dialogus.
6. Wham episodes. Favorite character is a Chaos Cultist, or Space Marines show up. Something that really hammers at the status quo.
Basically what would you like to see in a full production 'serious' 40K show.
If you feel like answering, have fun with it. I have a few things I'd like, which I'll be posting when it isn't too late.

I AM A MARINE PLAYER
"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos
"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
Well, off the top of my head: Boltons are total Night Lords/Iron Warriors. Starks are Space Wolves. Lannisters are Blood Angels. Dothraki are White Scars. Unsullied are Necrons. Iron Born are Red Corsairs/Dark Eldar. The Nights Watch= Death Watch. Dornish are Emperors Children/Alpha Legion.
Seriously though... IG war film would be cool. I could see humour, drama, war, friends dying and some cool moments. Like a devil dog hunting down a IG man and then a freaking Ultra space marine comes out of no where and look epic but then totally gets his head blown off by a chaos marine and the IG have to kill him and look better. XD
It depends on the scale you want to portray. If you focus on a hive city then I can see a Blade Runner with Bolters as a viable theme. But if you are wanting starship fights and full scale planetary warfare then you have to have a ton of characters, sets, cgi, etc to make it decent and that costs money. The biggest problem with 40k as a watchable media is there's not a lot of sex. You'll be hard pressed to get viewers based on the sci-fi violence alone.
Space Marines would be out of the question, save for extremely important plot moments.
Band of Brothers in 40k would be amazing - follow a platoon of Guardsmen as their regiment is mustered, and we get to see the galaxy through their eyes as new audiences. Insert other regiments and forces they fight alongside, Commissars, civilians on the worlds they liberate, even potential alien alliances for extreme cases.
It would have to be human focused to begin with. The viewer needs to relate. Maybe a rogue trader down on her luck. The main cast would be her and her crew of misfit outcasts.
First season plot could be. She has somehow become embroiled in a sector spanning conspiracy by mistake (being drunk). This draws the attentions of a cruel, secretly corrupted Inquisitor (our arch villain). Her and her crew have to evade the inquisition while trying to unravel the conspiracy to prove their innocence. This takes them from episodic adventure to episodic adventure, meeting all sorts of strange people and xenos (shh..). With the stakes getting higher the conspiracy reveals political and xenos corruption throughout the echelons of sector command. All this time we explore the characters and their dark secrets. Drop some hints here and there for future seasons.
Some episodic settings could be-
- Escaping a planet while a full scale IG invasion takes place ( very dramatic)
- A bizarre warp jump.
- Escaping a Dark Eldar raid.
- Court intrigue in the palace of a hive city governor.
The final episode would have the inquisitor finally about to kill her and cover his tracks when. Epic/brutal moment of SM arrival turnes the tide. This would be a total surprise to the viewer with the badassery leaving people hyped for the next season. There would have to of course be a reason for the SM to be there taking on an inquisitor but I'm sure we can swing it.
The most important thing would be to keep SMs as a thing of legend until the end.
Of course there would also be lots of sex and brutal violence a long the way

I could totally get into a Rogue Trader story, it'll allow for a wide variety in story elements while having the opportunity to not be tied to a specific planet. Such as; SOB, guard, minor xenos, "normal humans", genestealers, heretics, etc.
ok if this were to go anywhere a sector not established in fluff would be great. that way it could be fresh for those of us who know the lore but totally new for the uninitiated.
I agree with keeping Space Marines as an often talked about myth but rarely seen (at least until season 2).
showcasing just how far humanity has gone/fallen from former glory would be another interesting aspect.
if GW was smart they'd do it similar to thrones (i.e. HBO/showtime, etc) as it would allow for a larger budget/creative control and not having to worry about the censors.
I do enjoy my Sci fi as a mirror held up to human arrogance. The story of the fall of humanity would indeed be engaging. Both as an ever present grim dark backdrop to the series and as an opportunity for us as viewers to reflect. The trick would be to keep it from being too preachy.
