Since this model will only be available in a large box set for a while and it is likely to taken in multiples in many lists, I figured I get the ball rolling on some simple conversion ideas.

The first thing that comes to mind is to have a Cryptek "surfing" on a Lych Guard shield, possibly hovering on the backs of several Scarabs.
Alternatively, you could just clump 3-4 scarabs together and have the Cryptek on the back of the tallest one.

Any other ideas?

Or just buy one on eBay when people split up the box?

That's an option if you have very deep pockets, sure.

People will know that this is a sought after model that can only be purchased in the Forgebane set, thus they will not be cheap.
More importantly, many players will want more than 1.
The goal of this thread is to solve both problems.

The swirly crap around the Deceiver and the avatar of Innead? You could have scarabs arranged like that around a Cryptek held aloft by a Praetorian jetpack. Then as usual Cryptek stick built from a covenant rod with a Deathmark head and if you fancy such things, one of the Lychguard metal tabards. Floaty Cryptek with canoptek help made easy.

Nehekhara lives! Sort of!

Easiest Conversion: Get a Cryptek, glue it floating onto a scarab base

Cheapest: Warrior + Scarab base + extra bits you already have to "Cryptek it up", at minimum Deathmark head & back piece (spare from Immortal box) and Rod of covanent Staff of light (spare from Lych guard box).

You can easily do several like this with purely a few Warriors, scarab bases and extra bits you should already have.

The dark behind the eyes.

Do you need to stick that closely to the model?

I ask because literally nothing about the official model implies flight.

Here's what I'm thinking - get a regular cryptek (or whatever model you'd like to use as one), and mount 2 Lychguard shields on the back to look like wings.

IMO this will be a far better way to represent a 'flying cloak'. In addition, I think they'll also bear some resemblance to a beetle's carapace in-flight, so they won't even look out of place with the whole 'Tomb Kings in Space' theme.

I agree and that's certainly a cool option I like (a lot, actually).

However, since many players will want something similar to the model and that has something "Canoptek" about it, I'd at least want some scarabs on the base.

Crypteks are basically tech wizards. I could see them just floating over the ground by some unseen means. They don't need something that looks like it could make them fly to be able to fly.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Sure. So, given that Praetorians can fly with just a backpack thing, why do these "tech wizards" need to strap themselves to scarabs in order to do the same?

Agreed. But you have to admit it is at least a courtesy to your opponent to at least make some effort to making your model look like it can fly somehow and differentiate it from regular Crypteks.

Lychguard shields are everywhere when people start getting creative with necrons, which makes sense since they are detail rich and bulky and left over when building praetorians. But they're everywhere and easily recognized as being left over shields.

Try cutting them into new shapes or mod them further to break up their typical look

Good advice!

I love the ideas flowing here!

There's a great place to grab a cloak look - the overlord off the Command Barge. He's got a big cloak, and if you tweak the back a little to give it the more solid look, and use different arms, bob's your uncle.

I fear I'll have to leave that to people with actual talent.

I just had a vision of someone modelling Vanguard Veteran (with jump pack rules) trying to "fly" by furiously flapping two storm shields glued to his arms

Being as I have a third Command Barge incoming, I'd consider doing my own idea of making a bash of the Overlord and Cryptex stuff.. since I really don't need a handful of extra overlords, as I also plan on getting a Start Collecting box. Definitely one of those is going to meet a Destroyer body and get some tweaking there.
