I was going through my brb tonight and had a thought about building an army based around the idea of soups. Not that I wanted to try and do so myself, but I have seen and heard people saying that you couldn't take a battle-forged army or something unless there was at least one thing similar in their faction keywords. After glancing through the brb and a quick skim in my codex, I haven't seen anything that forbids me from taking a detachment of Tau and another of, for example, Eldar. I have seen multiple cases and points in both that have said each detachment must be from the same faction, but nothing saying detachment needed to be the same in a single army.

Also, I will apologize now if there is a simple answer and I'm simply blind to it. I don't have very errata, faq, document open right now in front of me and I've been up for 18 hours from work and such. Please bare with me here

In non-matched Battle-forged play (for example a Narrative Mission that has Battle-forged armies), perfectly fine. Only at the detachment level must units share a keyword. Of course in Open Play you can use whatever.

In Matched Play (i.e. the rule set 99% of games follow, even in pick-up games), every unit must share a Faction Keyword across all detachments, BRB Page 214, "Army Faction" paragraph.

T'audar and SuperFriends are dead. Long live Imperial Soup.

In order to be battleforged in Matched Play (which would be just about any tournament, and from what I've seen also most pickup games), you have to have a keyword that's common throughout the entire army, as well as each detachment having a common keyword (not necessarily the same). You can have detachments that work on different keywords, but there still must be one keyword that's common in the army. For example, you could have a CHAOS SPACE MARINES detachment and a DEATH GUARD detachment, but since both detachments also have CHAOS as a keyword, they make a legitimate army. Since GW did not establish FILTHY XENOS SCUM as a keyword, there really isn't an existing keyword to link T'au with Eldar.

I do have a side question if you have the new T'au Codex (haven't received mine yet) - did they make provisions for being able to take a renegade Astra Militarum detachment as a Tau auxiliary detachment, or is that something GW's abandoned now?

That's what I suspected. Thanks!
