Hello! My local game store is starting an escalation league in May, starting with 25 Power Level, so I need to assemble and paint a force in April. I am getting half of ForgeBane and have a Start Collecting box, another box of Skitarii, and 2 Enginseers. So, my unit selections can come from:

2 Tech-Priest Dominus
2 Enginseers
3 boxes of Skitarii
1 Onager Dunecrawler
2 Armiger Warglaives

So, I am unsure what to take as I haven't played Warhammer 40k 8th yet, nor Adeptus Mechanicus. I have read many guides and information on the army, here and elsewhere and played 40k for a long time up through 6th.

I know I will have at least a Patrol Detachment to get the base 3 CP. At 25 PL, I don't think trying to make a Battalion is worth the + 3 CP, as I'd only have 2 HQ and 3-4 Troops. So, here is what I am currently thinking, but I welcome any and all advice! I also heard someone might be bringing 2-3 tanks as their starting list.

This list is 25 PL

Forgeworld - thinking Stygies VIII to help survive shooting early game and perhaps infiltrate.

HQ - Tech-Priest Dominus - not really sure what relic or weapons may be best on this - so I welcome advice.

Troops:
5 Skitarii Rangers - Alpha with standard rifle, 2 standard rifle, 2 with transuranic arquebus - with omnispex
10 Skitarii Vanguard - Alpha (arc-rifle?), 3 with plasma caliver, 6 with radium carbine -data-tether or omnispex?

Hvy: Onager Dunecrawler with Icarus Array and heavy stubber - broad spectrum data tether?

Thanks for any help/guidance you can provide!

To get a battalion at this power level with these units you would have to forgo the dunecrawler or the Warglaives so you are right.

Forgeworld - Stygies is good for a ranged army like this. Others that are good include - Mars as it gives you a second chance to get shroudpsalm and Wrath of mars is real good for Vanguard
- Lucius (my personal favorite) a lot of common weapons have -1 AP so this one wroks really good, especially if you have shroudpsalm or in cover. Also they have a teleport stratagem which is nice but at this level not nessessary.
- Agripinaa hitting on 5s on overwatch is insane for vanguard. there stratagem can't be used with this list.

HQ - for the side arm go with the Phosphor Serpenta the other is a pistol and you want to avoid close combat and it can be replaced with a better weapon. For the main weapon it is a toss up. the Erad ray is stronger but you need to be close for max effectiveness but the Volkite blaster is more reliable. for you I would suggest the Volkite blaster as the flat 3 shots and chance to get mortal wounds is easier to use. for relics it depends how you want to use him; if you keep him back to help the Dunecrawler the Autocaduceus of Arkhan Land will really help with keeping the crawler alive. If you keep it closer to the Vanguard to help them either the Phosphoenix or the Raiment of the Technomartyr work well.

Troops - Rangers look good. For Vanguard the alpha can't take a arc rifle. He can take and arc pistol and a melee weapon if you don't give him the radium carbine. They are about equal for a vanguard alpha, a pistol and melee weapon work good if you think they will get charged at some point. Three plasma calivers is good though I might replace one with an arc rifle to give the unit a little more range and variability. for that unit I would take the data tether as and that size moral becomes a factor and the tether will help mitigate that.

Heavy - unless you know they are going to take a lot of flying units the best by far is the neutron laser as the long range damage of this thing is hard to compete with. The broad spectrum data tether is the better of the two as there is no point were the crawler should not be shooting.

looks ok, but at such a low pl game I'd swap out the Dominus for an enginseer, get a second 5 man ranger squad.

something like:

Enginseer

5 Rangers: 2 arquebus, omnispex
5 Rangers: 1 arquebus, omnispex
10 Vanguard: 3 plasma, data tether

Onager: Neutron laser, data tether

I feel this gives more bang /pl. you could also put an arc rifle in the second ranger squad since you are not playing with points.

Not a bad idea, though the Dominus does help heal the Onager more and allow reroll of 1s for shooting. Is that worth more than a second ranger squad? Not sure, which is why I'm asking!

Yes, the re rolls and healing is worth it. In my experience the enginseer is a good low cost hq slot to help get command points but for playing at least one dominus is good and at this power level its better.

If you want to do a low points army, just make two Battalions with a ton of vanilla Vanguard. Your best Forge World options are Stygies or Graia for this. If you do Graia, you want the Warlord trait so your Vanguard don't get mulched by a melee army. Don't put your Crawler into that Battalion.
