Subject: Few questions about Relics, Stratagems and Traits
|

Guardsman with Flashlight

Hi,
I'm new to w40k (2 games played) and I have a few questions concerning relics, stratagems and traits :
1- When I'm creating an army on Battlescribe, in the No Force Org Slot, I have to choose between how many relics I want, like Gifts of Decay (1 relic) or Gifts of Decay (2 relics) for example. Is there any rules stating how many relics should I take in a detachment?
2- My friend and I are playing 750pts ATM (we don't have many miniatures). Currently, I'm playing a list consisting of only one patrol containing 1 Daemon Prince of Nurgle, 1 Poxbringer, 22 PB and 2 Foetid-Bloat Drones. I know that my army is battleforged, because all my units share at least one faction word (CHAOS, NURGLE and DAEMON precisely). I'm not sure if I can use Chaos Daemons stratagems and traits, since FBD are found in the Death Guard Codex, not in the Chaos Daemons Codex. But they do have the DAEMON faction word.
3- If my FBD are considered nurgle daemons, does that mean I can use Locus of Virulence, since all units in my detachment share NURGLE and DAEMON faction words?
I've played my two first games with one Gift of Decay and no daemon stratagems, because I didn't want to cheat.
Thank you for your help!

0. Rules questions go in YMDC 1. The rules for Relics are found at the back of each codex. It details exactly how relics work and how to get them. 2. Foetid-Bloat Drones do not have the Faction Keyword DAEMON, they only have the Keyword DAEMON. As such you're not able to use Chaos Daemons stratagems etc. You'd have to put them in a Death Guard Outrider detachment with a Death Guard HQ and a 3rd Death Guard Fast attack, or in a Death Guard Patrol with a Death Guard HQ and Death Guard Troops. 3. In this case, it will affect them because they have the right keywords. With the sole exception of Daemon Stratagems (which got a special snowflake ignore the rules type FAQ), Faction Keywords and Keywords have no difference mid battle.

Please don't do this. Battlescribe is a very poor teacher of the rules, can be inaccurate, and doesn't support the hobby. You'll have a much better experience and both be better players if you consult your Codex, and likely have more welcoming replies here, too.

So... in other words rather then buying the rule book you wanna use battlescribe and let the internet help you basicly pirate the rules for your army?

And not even competently. At least with competent piracy you get the actual rulebook.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

I didn't know Battlescribe was so incompetent. We use at least the basic rulebook pdf from GW and I already have the Daemon Codex, but not the DG Codex

It is not inaccurate. In fact its more up to date than some of the codex's.
People tend to be way too old school and think you MUST have a codex, and a pen and paper....it s not true. I have every codex for my armies...they sit on the shelf when I am done reading them. Battlescribe is the way to go for list building.

You need both. Battlescribe is not incompetent, it is a tool created by the community and is very useful. But it is not a substitute for the rules and never claims to be. You will miss lots of things without the codex.

Apart from morality of piracy you run into issue if you rely only on battlescribe that IT HAS ERRORS! I have seen errors myself both on list building(points off here and there, allowing illegal combinations here and there) and also errors on actual rules. Combine that to the fact that you can alter them easily it's basically zero proof of rules. Opponent wants to see rules for your unit? Battlescribe print out is NOT answer. Or you want to play vs my orks who have assault 6 S7 -3 D2 shootas?-) Look! My battlescribe print out says so!
Now sure for listbuilding it's useful assistance but it's no codex replacement. If you can't show codex and rules from there if we play game stops right there.

I use battlescribe all the time for rules and it has very rarely been wrong. It is not perfect, but from friendly games I think its fine. I wouldn't take it to a tournament though. I have used it for years and I've never seen the option of alter it. Is that a feature you get from buying it?
Personally I really dislike buying codices as I'd rather just buy more models with that $. With a bit of effort and cross checking + pirating you can easily go without a codex and save the $. I will admit though there has been times it has failed me so pirating codices proper is my advice if you don't want to buy more books. ^^;

The files are there to edit and there's "battlescribe data editor" that's installed on your pc along with roster editor...Not that difficult to use. At least for changing existing data files(creating them is big work. I did bit similar work in another app for another game and damn there's just loads of data to insert!). So if somebody insists on using battlescribe I could easily counter that next time on my own battlescribe print out Show him for good why I don't trust mere print outs of 3rd party program using data files of yet another 3rd party. Those are no way official, contains quite a few errors, will never be error free and of course obviously easily editable. No need for any programming skill. It's fairly intuitive graphical user interface. I want my assault 6 S7 -3 D2 shootas for my 6 pts(sorry make that 2 pts!) shooty boyz it's easy peasy.
Now useful tool yes(I use it myself as well) but complete replacement for codex, especially on any sort of "official" enviroment no. Doesn't even contain every rule from codexes.

Battlescribe helps, but it never substitutes a codex. Use it do create the army, but course through the codex (and its FAQs) to confer if the points and rules are all correct.

I've actually used Battlescribe to correct rules mistakes other people have made (mate of mine ran the Corvus Blackstar with the unerrated smoke rules, only noticed when I checked the Blackstar in Battlescribe.) Basically, Battlescribe is great and the Codex is going to be errated so often than a deadtree version is trash. The PDFs are better, but harder and more annoying to leaf through to check things.

Battle scribe is really wishy washy, its a great tool, but a really bad teacher, you will want to use a codex to teach yourself.
