I kind of agree, it doesn't really need an invulnerable save though. 40 wounds is a crapton of T8 wounds you need to get through, the issue is that it's completely useless once it has lost the first 20 wounds. If the guns and attacks were more powerful and it would degrade less quickly (at 50% and 25% wounds instead of 75%, 50% and 25%), I would be fine with paying 1k points for it. But currently it's inferior to any of the daemon primarchs, who cost less than half of what the stompa is.
But then again leman russ provides like 10-20 wounds MORE for about same price. And being on multiple models gets survivability boost there as well(plus degrade slower). And 12d6 S8 -2 d3 vs 1d6(at worse BS) S10 -4 d6 and 6 heavy bolters vs rest of stompas guns....Well dunno I would be taking russ firepower instead(you can also fit some sponsons for point difference). And russ isn't even most efficient comparison. Could be units that make stompa pale even more.

Look no further than the Ork's own army list. You can get 2 Gorkanauts for significantly less than the cost of the Stompa. Those two Nauts provide 12 attacks all up, to the Stompa's 4. They have the same Toughness and save. The Stompa is a bit faster at 12" instead of 8 for the Nauts. And the Stompa has 4 more wounds total.
The Nauts will be striking at Str 16 whilst the Stompa will be Str 20. Trouble is, outside of some incredibly rare models that will never be seen in a typical game, nothing in the game has more than T8. Meaning that Str 16 and Str 20 are functionally identical, but the Stompa pays more points for being stronger.
The Stompa does do 6 wounds straight, at Ap-5, whilst the Nauts are doing D6 at Ap-4. The difference between Ap-5 and Ap-4 however is minor. The ranged attacks on both are more or less pointless, though the Stompa puts out a little bit more. Regardless, it's not enough to make an appreciable difference between the two.
If we compare the two going up against say, a Baneblade, a Stompa will typically carve 18 wounds off it in a single round. The two Nauts on the other hand will shave off 24 with average rolls on their wounds.

Well true that and of course neither 'naut is all that hot choice to begin with(wonder which one is better. I'll be assembling one soon...). So if inefficient nauts are better than stompa and not that much different in toughnesss(stompa has 4 more wounds than 2 gorganauts but costs about 250 pts more and stompa degrades faster) while beating stompa in h2h(primary function of ork walkers)...
But even externally leman russ are in terms of survivability better than stompa so 40 wounds T8 isn't that hot arqument as to why stompa might be good. Russes provide tons of T8 wounds as well for same price while providing significant firepower. Okay h2h stompa wins but close to 1000 pts single h2h model is not super hot. He'll struggle to reach to enough combats to earn back. Heaven forbid it needs to clear path through chaff first.

Then again one could arque it shouldn't even be titan equilavent. Worse than warhound but cheaper and worth points would be fine. Stompa has never been warhound level walker.
Still real issue is it sucks right now. It either needs hefty price drop or serious stat updates. But gw designers have shown zere signs orks are in for happy surprise with codex. Plenty opposite signals though

Index and ca shows well how little they understand how orks work. Also ca showed how little they care about balance by making it marketing tool. Unsurprising since more balanced game, the more it hurts gw's profits.
Ca ork changes were joke and nowhere near enough. And funnily enough only viable build really benefitted. If they cared about balance and understood orks it would have been lot different ca.
So expecting stompa getting huge price drop is super optimistic. Good if it gets like 50 pts drop which ls nowhere near enough
Not to mention other codexes and previous ork codexes. Orks have at best had semi decent codex. Meanwhile armies which have enthustiac player in studio consistently get good ones

You have no idea who or what is happening in the studio; or if you do, please list some names? Who are these unenthusiastic players? There are actual grievances to address and you choose strawmen?
CA changes were kinda pidly across the board; it ended up being a bit of a stab at selling new missions and stuff more than an actual game ballance (which makes sense, because they were midway through releasing codices.) orks are not the only army that didnt get appropriate price adjustments. Necrons, tau, space marines, Greyknights, Slanesh theeme chaos all got nothing worthwhile. If there's a conspiracy to feth over unfavorable armies, why did the poster boys not get a cookie?
The ork 5th codex when wound allocation shenanigans were in full force was a plenty mean thing.
The 'plenty of evidence' you've presented is nothing but the fact that the codex is yet to be released. Orks are monobuild at the moment yes, but thats not evidence of malice on the part of the dev team.
If the codex comes out and the only viable option competatively is still greentide I will be plenty upset; but expecting the index to work as a properly fleshed out codex is foolish, even with chapter approved punctuating the wait.

Dude... Orks are immune to most toxins... this might be why. But no really! Sometimes things need to get a little toxic to find and route out the good stuff. You don't win a WAAAAGH! without breaking a few Gretchin I think is how the saying goes or something. You have to offend people to get the conditions to produce interesting ideas. Look at the other Ork threads I have created. Out of the pages and pages of the stuff we get on every page 1 or 2 posts going deep into the maths and how the solutions might be formed. And these come from the results of people just being angry with each other. It's worth it all just for that.
As for the Stompa... wouldn't be awesome to finish that Stompa and put it up in a game? Honestly it's not even that large... about the size of a knight (little higher) but defo the same or smaller than that new knight. So it's not like a titan... I really wish they would just make it a knight and have the Ork Nauts be miniknights.
AS FOR CA!!! Oh man... now that I will genuinely get angry at! It was a full on rip off and i am so happy I never bought it without looking through a friends first. I don't even think the missions are new! If memory serves might right all of them (or at least some of them) were just copy and paste missions from 7th edition and older missions. The Apocalypse crap was basically freely available from a google search or asking people on reddit. The whole point of the thing was to get people hyped (kinda like we paid for an advertisement) for the codex stuff but what we got for orks was hilarious! Like... seriously... out of all of the stratagems they wrote up? They decided these were the best two to show off what might be coming up? Oh... and that warlord trait... Even Necron players agree the ones they got were probable some of the best in their codex so I'm scared for our. And you can't tell me they don't have the Ork codex already ready (or in a beta form) because either. A. they did pick the best ones and that's not a good sign. B. they are going to write out codex in less than a few months which is not good. It was really their chance to shine! Show us a little glimpse of hope! And then they nerfed our Kill Tank or something (I don't own one but my mate was extremely upset seen as I saw it blow up all the time before the nerf).
Although.... I will admit that the power claw points reduction was nice. But that's about it.. I think the huge problem is that when ever I complained people just told me to shut up and wait for 7th edition. And then 8th edition. And then CA. And now the codex... I'm not saying I'm ready to give up but I know a lot of people who are.
But no seriously... CA was a bit of a rip off and it's worse when my friend (who worked for GW) told me that shop sellers were actually encouraged to sell more rule books because that made them a lot of cheaper money. Kinda makes me suspicious when they do stuff like this or split up rule books. But then we're getting off topic...

Couple of things,
1: no we don't know who is on the studio team, we do know that they don't have a 4k studio ork army which is scary since they literally make the models/rules for that army.
2: CA Were pidly across the board, I agree completely, However, for Orkz it was especially grievous because we have so many units that BADLY need attention, add that to the fact that they nerfed our kill tanks to uselessness and then gave us 2 piss poor stratagems makes me think the CA was worse for orkz then other factions.
3: Orkz didn't have a 5th edition Codex, Orkz had a 4th edition codex that never got updated until 7th.
4: I distinctly remember people saying pre 6th edition, 7th edition and pre 8th for ork players to suck it up and wait for there chance to shine. Lets take a look at 7th as a refresher.
Codex comes out, is horrible
2 new walkers come out, they suck.
more codex's come out and are way better
Ghaz supplement comes out to buff orkz,it sucks and is useless
second supplement comes out and is useless
New aircraft comes out and is useless.
So its a few things that are added together which make most ork players feel that GW either A: Doesn't care/like about the faction or B: Doesn't understand the faction.
Personally i am in the 2nd camp because I refuse to believe that a company based on profit motivation would purposely hurt its sale just to focus on their favorite army.

We do know that Cruddance and Kelly are still working at GW and most likely are part of that team. At least Phil Kelly is known to have a huge ork army, but according to and interview during 7th he doesn't play it anymore. Studio armies are most likely owned by the studio, not the designers themselves, so we don't actually know if any of them have any orks.
All CA nerfed FW superheavies across the board for no reason other than keeping them out of matched play. Next to no index faction was happy with what they got from CA. 4: I distinctly remember people saying pre 6th edition, 7th edition and pre 8th for ork players to suck it up and wait for there chance to shine. Lets take a look at 7th as a refresher.
Pre 6th would have been 5th, at which point orks were in a very good place. Battlewagon bash and kan walls constantly placed well in tournaments, and there were multiple additional army builds that were not considered trash tier. Codex comes out, is horrible 2 new walkers come out, they suck. more codex's come out and are way better Ghaz supplement comes out to buff orkz,it sucks and is useless second supplement comes out and is useless New aircraft comes out and is useless. Agree, all of those publications and models have been terrible. Just curious, what is the the second supplement you are referring to? The Red Waaagh? Personally i am in the 2nd camp because I refuse to believe that a company based on profit motivation would purposely hurt its sale just to focus on their favorite army.
Still, they managed to release decent codices for armies that have been just as fethed as orks for the last two editions as orks have been. Nids, BA, DE are all looking good, so I'm carefully confident that they will at least try to make orks great again Only time will tell if they succeed.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.

Personally saw CA as something of a panic measure with points adjustments to get the concept established before they really knew what needed doing - I hope it will improve in years to come.
GW have no idea how to integrate a "horde" army into the game at any level alongside smaller elite armies - otherwise stuff like the heavy bolter would have a MMG & HMG version, specifically to provide a less mobile anti-horde version - with vehicles getting the MMG version (otherwise its a bit too much) because they generally have much more restricted vision and arcs.
This is not an "ork" thing, you can see it with how other horde armies can simply overrun say marines (what they can do when they get there varies).
Its also an interaction with the fact weapon ranges relative to movement distances are way too short for the current rates of fire.
In effect the game as presented can support horde v horde and elite v elite, but elite v horde is horrible unbalanced.
Ork boyz work for one reason alone as I see it, they have two attacks base in close combat, which they can buff further so while they drop like flies they are dangerous when they get there (a bit like hormagaunts), if they had one they would be garbage.
Same reason the larger CC monsters and stuff like the stompa isn't much cop up close, low number of attacks - and also why the super elite, best of the best "marines" suck up close, they are expensive with a single attack so simply get swamped.
How to fix this?
I think the key is adjusting morale possible to include a "stunned" and "shaken" level, the first of which requires a Ld test to advance or charge (can move normally) and can only fire at the nearest target without a penalty (like Tyranids out of synapse say) - the second prohibiting advancing and charging and increasing the penalty to say half the number of shots.
This allows the "elite" armies to suppress the hordes, without getting weapons such that they wipe out other elite armies without trying.
i.e. you need a way to make horde armies less dependable, and elites a way to gain more time.
I do like the idea of not just making negatives modifiers on the dice, but reduce the number of attacks

They put out the Ghazghkull supplement a second time. They removed the Green Tide formation, made some irrelevant changes to a couple of other formations, and copy-pasted the formations from the Red Waaagh into it and gave us three new formations with Flyers which must still now count as some of the laziest formations GW has ever produced (each one was just 3 of a particular Ork flyer and had useless effects). All in all it was a train-wreck.

I think the trust thing with GW goes like an Ex-GF/BF who was horrible to you for years. You finally decide to dump them to find a better partner and suddenly they text you to say they have "changed". They buy you stuff, smile all the time and try to show they're putting in effort even if they're making similar mistakes. You can't tell whether things are just going to go back the way they were or you should find someone else. Sad fact is I keep giving GW a "2nd chance" but when I actually had this relationship I ended up finally dumping them and ended up with an amazing partner. It's funny how I give a table top game more chances than a real life woman. XD

True, but KMKs were a borderline unit at the competitive level, (They were still a good unit) but now they are definitely in the competitive area and do decent work, granted if left in the open they still die REALLY quick, a lascannon or two finishes it off.

I don't know... Maybe I'm just spoilt because Orks have had great amazing things in the past (look at 2nd edition for OP mega Orks) but I kinda want more out of a Stompa than just a large thing that shoots... I didn't pick Orks just so I could play weirdly shaped Marine clones!
I want something fun with the stompa... maybe something risky! I think i get what they did with the extra shooting from the guns but that's not what i mean... I can't put my head to it but I want something orky!

I'm pumped for the possible changes to the stompa but scared at the same time. I'm building mine today and man I hate how they didn't number the peices in the instruction manual

We used to be the kings of Dakka, not so much, we used to be the coolest horde army, not anymore, we used to have the best vehicle that rammed things, again, not anymore. one of the best anti-tank units in the game (Tankbustas) not anymore.
I have a love affair with Orks. They're the army I think about most after TS.
I often dream of trukks dropping off tankbustaz and then ramming into whatever is in the way with wrecking balls. Mek guns blasting away. Koptaz outflanking dropping bombs. Kanz lumbering forward.
They're are one of the few armies that have really great vehicles in melee. People just don't want to pay so much for a T6 4+ platform.
The tankhammer is a wicked awesome concept.
And they have the widest variety of tools.
They just need traits, stratagems, all their spells, and some point drops. Automatically Appended Next Post: SemperMortis wrote:
True, but KMKs were a borderline unit at the competitive level, (They were still a good unit) but now they are definitely in the competitive area and do decent work, granted if left in the open they still die REALLY quick, a lascannon or two finishes it off.
A heck lot more than that. The damn things have 6 wounds. A single LC shot has a 7% chance. It's a lot to toss at a sub 50 point model.

6 wounds plus 5 gretchins that can hold objectives or screen something else. And each gun acts like an individual unit so the opponent must declare split fire and maybe fail to kill a single gun just wounding 2+ of them or overkill just one with multiple shots from the same squad.
I never play with less than 4 of them, but usually I go with 6.

Something we can all agree on was the KMK was pretty good. So good we actually thought GW might nerf it.. XD But I never got one because at almost £30 for just 1 it wasn't worth the points addition to my army. if It was sold in 3s I might have got a box.

Ugg, yea, that kit is so beautiful, but I would need to win the lottery before I even thought about it.

Meh, I just find it really boring to play Orks... as I say... It's just Space Marines but smaller and greener. Hopefully the codex adds some orky taste.
Wasn't the stompa mentioned recently in the new White Dwarf?

Ah, I see. Not getting a codex war pretty normal back then unless you were vanilla marines. Some codices were still dating back to the beginning of 3rd when I picked up orks in 5th.

Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |
