...Or was the Necron codex a flop? If you have other armies to play, is the new Necron codex worth a purchase?

Just wondering

I wouldn't say flop. As a player of solely Necrons since mid 6th, I can say this is my favorite codex so far (even though it's no Decurion, but I will hold back my QQing). Is it comparable to other power armies? Haven't played yet, but apparently no. Is it playable? Definitely.

Not a flop, it's actually one of the best balanced codexs they gave released, they are not broken or over powered. They are really just a good army to fight.

To many unpainted models to count.

Its a fun book with tons of list opportunities and great combos.
If you play necrons, get it

Really if you want a more in depth discussion on the necron codex you should check out the Tactics Forum.

To those that say there is no stupid questions I say, "Is this a stupid question?"

It's good, but I think it's kind of bland army composition-wise.

The powers were the huge miss for me, but everything else is pretty cool.

It's good, not a flop, and as with everything else, it depends on what you want.

First, an anecdote. I regularly play RG and/or Blood Angels as my "main" army. I play against a regular player, my buddy, who I would say is a 40k "expert" (I'm what I would call an "average" player, at best).

I have not beaten him with my RG or BA's in the last 15 or so games...both armies that I would say I'm pretty competent with.

In contrast, last night I played against him for the first time using my Necrons (with the new Codex) in this edition, and I tabled him. (or nearly so). It should be noted that it wasn't a great matchup for his melee-centric army, and I got first turn. Even so, I generally don't do that well against this particular player given that he's very good. I'm certainly not chalking it up to my elite skills, either. Some of it's the 'Crons. Take from that what you will.

Our troop choices are excellent, our Characters are absolute studs with a host of traits and stratagems and dynasty tactics to really tailor your list the way you want.

'CronAir is no longer a thing, however, so if you were hoping to spam barges and scythes, you'll probably have a hard time of it.

Necrons are my first army, and 8th is my first edition, so I don't have a ton to go off. We definitely got a healthy bump from the index, with more flexibility and options, and a few units received pretty good price cuts. Destroyers got buffed, Wraiths got buffed, and there are some really cool traits and stratagems. Haven't seen anything that screams "Spam me!" yet, and I'm fine with that - but some people think Tomb Blades and Destroyers could get there.

There's a pretty in-depth discussion thread going on here.

Only disappointment so far - I think the Necrons need some cooler artwork.

Necrons got a very noticeable bump, granted they were at the bottom before.

The Fact that you don't see a dozen threads complaining about the power level, is a pretty good indicator that it is a healthy codex. Some options still aren't where they need to be, but it is a solid dex.

I would not be surprised to see Necrons higher up if we see some of the top tier soup lists get nerfed.

Well it is hard to make it any worse then what they was in the index.

It is by no means a power codex, but it is a balanced codex that puts moust fokus on getting your units up the table instead of beeing the static hard to kill army it was in 7th.

The RP is the same as in the index so you wont get any noticable use from it unless you go warrior blob spam.
