So, the rules for combat drugs say

Units with this ability gain a bonus during the battle depending in the drugs injected into their veins. Before the battle, roll on the table below to see which combat drug the unit is using. Alternatively you can pick the bonus the unit receives, but if you do this you cannot choose a bonus that has already been taken by another unit until all six combat drugs have been taken once each.

I was noticing that it references a specific unit, not all units, when saying that you can either roll or choose. Would that mean that, for example, I could give two units the specific drugs I wanted them to have, and then roll on the table for a third unit, in the hopes that they would get the same drug as one of the others, since I can't just choose it?

It reads that you can only choose to roll or pick your drugs. If you roll then the results can duplicate drugs within your units. If you pick which drug(s) you want then you can only assign 1 drug to a unit and you can not duplicate your choice of that drug until you have assigned all of the other drugs to other units.

In other words, assuming 6 drugs, if you want Unit A to have Drug 1 you can not give Drug 1 to any other unit until Drugs 2-6 have been assigned to Units B-F. Once you've done this then you can give any Drug you like to Unit G.

What is your argument for it reading that you can only choose one or the other, given that it says "roll to see which drug the unit is using...alternatively you can pick which bonus the unit receives."

I'm perfectly willing to be convinced otherwise, but at face value that reads to me as you choose which at the unit level.

Because if you could choose some and roll others then it defeats the purpose of only allowing 1 drug to be given out until all of the other drugs are dispensed. If you could choose 1 drug and then roll the rest then you could end up with 3 uses of the same drug which is against the rule needing to cycle through them before duplicating them.

The designers are giving you the choice of assigning which drug goes to which unit. The disadvantage of that option is that you can't duplicate choices. If you decide to make rolls then you give up control but you gain the chance to have multiple uses of the same drug without worrying about duplication.

You can mix and match picking and rolling, but if you Pick Drug 1 for unit A, you can't pick it again until you pick the other drugs for 5 other units. You can opt to roll for Unit B, though that doesn't lower the number of times you have to pick before duplicating.

You could also just roll all of them and end up with the same drug on every unit. If the designers were trying to keep you from having the same drug on every unit, they would have forced you to reroll if you got the same drug until each had been used once, as well.

How does it defeat the purpose? The point of requiring you to give them all out is to keep you from just giving every unit the same drug without any risk of not getting it. By choosing some and rolling others, that is still happening, you still cannot guarantee yourself the same drug without risk.

Any way, this is all RAI argument, when the question here is whether RAW you can mix and match.

RaW you can.

You can, for each 7nit, choose to either pick the drug (obeying the restriction on duplication) OR roll. This isn't at all ambiguous, as each use is of "the unit", singular. There is no indication at all that you pick the method once for the entire army.

Raw you can mix and match if you want to gamble.

The rule itself says that you can't mix rolling and picking. The default mode is randomly determine as an alternative you can pick which drug goes to which unit with the no repeat clause in effect. Since it say alternately it's an either/or choice.

Where does it say that? It gives you two alternatives, at no point is it stated they are exclusive. You roll or pick on an individual unit basis.

Here is the 1st definition of alternative from dictionary.com-

" noun
1. a choice limited to one of two or more possibilities, as of things, propositions, or courses of action, the selection of which precludes any other possibility: "

I would hope that you would accept that as a definition of alternatively as well.

Rule #6 of YMDC. Please familiarise yourself with them.

And yes, it's exclusive ON THE UNIT LEVEL. Not the army level. You can't pick AND roll for a single unit.

So you would have been fine by me saying that's how the word "alternatively" is used? I think not.

As to the unit by unit choosing I see your point and will concede the argument.
