The wording for sa'cea sept's tenet is, aside from the leadership buff: "in the shooting phase you can re-roll a single failed hit roll when a unit with this tenet shoots."

I naturally took this to mean that you get one re-roll per unit no matter what, markerlight re-rolls included. However, some people have started claiming that this means you get only one re-roll, period per unit, including any regular re-rolls of one.

This would seem an idiotic interpretation to me- why would the GW design team give us a faction bonus that is negated by another bonus that the entire freaking army is built around?

Could anyone help me out? Like, is there an FAQ ruling on stuff like this somewhere? It would seem such a stupid way of handling what would otherwise be one of the best tau sept buffs. Nothing about it would make sense to me.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

You have 1 extra re-roll per unit on top of regular re-rolls. I suspect people are being pedantic but out of the two possible RAW interpretations, only one is concistent with the rules for other factions and is the most likely RAI.

I think the important bit here is the 'can'. Can isn't prohibitive of other things, it just allows you to do the thing it's referring to. Just because you 'can' do x, doesn't mean you can't do y. If the wording said 'only' instead of 'can', then you'd have issues.

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Thanks, man! That's a good argument, I'll be sure to bring that up.

Basically it allows units with that tenant who may be shooting something not marker lit to re-roll one hit roll. However if your firing at a marker lit unit and have 1 marker light on said target you can re-roll all your 1’s and one other non 1 that missed as well.

Easy peasy.

Correct.

Put another way the rule is giving you permission to something. Markerlights give you permissions to re-roll any 1s, the Sa'cae sept gives you permission to re-roll one die. Two things granting you different permissions has no bearing on one another unless explicitly denies the other.

Frankly, there is no sensible reading of the rule otherwise. Sa'cae bonus turning off marker light re-rolls reeks of bad faith play.

Sa'cea might be the only tenet where railheads could be viable. And solo railsides. Generally rail stuff in MSU form.
