I just noticed that certain armies - I don’t own every codex that’s been released for this Edition - only the faction fielding the Warlord can take relics. Is this general or specific?

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

In general, you get a free relic for a character of the same FACTION as your warlord. Nothing to do with detachments.

If you have a pure faction detachment, you can then unlock the stratagem to allow more relics to characters of that faction. This does not have to be the same Faction as your warlord.

The SM and Custodes codices both state only the detachment with the Warlord and can take relics.

I read them both last night and that’s what they state explicitly.

Well, I can't find anything like that, so will need page number and quote.

From page 200 of Codex Space Marines:

If your army is led by a Space Marines Warlord, you may give one of the following Chapter Relics to a Space Marine CHARACTER in your army.

From page 76 of Codex Adeptus Custodes:

If your army is led by an Adeptus Custodes Warlord, you may give one of the following Relics of Terra to an ADEPTUS CUSTODES CHARACTER in your army.

Neither requires the character to be in the same detachment as the Warlord.

Okay so just the faction. For this example if a SM is your WL then no relics for the Custodes.

Right but if you run a pure custodes detachment does that not unlock stratagem use for them. just spend the cp to give them 1.

You mean pure Custodes army?

No, just a pure custodes detachment. That's all that's needed to unlock stratagems

My query is solely in regards to relics.

Yup. You need a Warlord to have access to relics, and the Warlord's faction dictates which relics you can select and who you can give them to. Custodes WL means access to Custodes Relics and only Custodes characters can wield them, even if you have SM characters in another detachement in the same army.

Don't the custodes have a stratagem that allow them to get an additional Custodes relic for 1 CP? As the Deathguard FAQ established for an army with both CSM and Deathguard detachments, as long as each detachment is pure, the stratagems to get extra relics from each faction can be used. So, you could use the Custodes Stratagem to get a Custodes artifact for that detachment.

Yes they do. It's called 'Open The Vaults'.

I figured they did since it seems every army gets handed the "have another relic for 1 CP' card. I just couldn't remember what they called theirs. Thanks!

No this is entirely not how it works. A warlord gives you a free relic. This is stated in the rules quotes previously in this thread.
It does not say you are only limited to using the relics of your warlord faction for your entire army.

You are free to use the relevant stratagems from any army that you have unlocked to buy more Relics for that faction.

For a rule you can show people: Check the Deathguard faq it actually answers this.
(A CSM warlord with a separate Deathguard detachment can buy Deathguard relics).

Yup. I was reading it as just the OP wanting to access faction A's relics without having a WL from faction A (wasn't familiar with the DG FAQ at the time) just for the first relic. But that first, free relic absolutely has to be from the same faction as your WL and given to a character from the same faction as your WL.
