Best descriptor I could come up with...sorry if it is vague

So my Warlord has the trait Grand Strategist. not that it matters to much but he is a Vostroyan and also has Kurov's Aquila

The army is two parts, the guard and the Raven Guard Marines

If I place the warlord as my first drop then use the out of shadows ability am I able to roll to see if I get the Command Point back?

This has been asked multiple times. The simple answer is we don't know because GW didn't properly define what "alive" means in the context of that trait.

If the warlord is on the battlefield he is clearly alive. If he isnt alive he wouldnt be on the battlefield. Dead models are removed from the battlefield. The answer is yes, if you deploy your warlord first, you can roll to see if you get CP back.

Yes. Recent FAQs give precendent that this is the correct way to play this. The Astra Militarum FAQ specifically amends the RAW so this is true.

The FAQ now gives a clear answer - see above.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

What about getting CPs back for extra relics? That'd be a no then?

100% no. You have to use the relic CP before deployment.

The UM Warlord trait was also re-worded by the FAQ to say he must be present on the battlefield.
