Hi,

I am a new WH40K player. Could you explain the rule of 3 for me, please? For 1000-2000 build, can I use 3 units or 3 models for the same datasheet?

You're allowed to use the same datasheet 3 times only, if it is not a Troop or Dedicated Transport.
Let's say you're starting with Space Marines.

You're allowed to bring:
3 Captains
6 Tactical Squads
3 Predators

But you're not allowed to bring
4 Captains
4 Predators

Oddly enought right now you're allowed to bring different kinds of captains, based on whether or not they have their own datasheet in the codex.

3 Captains
3 Captains in Terminator Armour
3 Captains in Cataphractii Armour
is a legal list, for example

3 Captains
3 Captains with Jump Packs
isn't, since Jump Packs are an option on the Captain datasheet, unlike e.g. Terminator Armour.

Last but not least a bit of a disclaimer:
a) this is still a beta rule and likely to change at least in some way. My mistake - it's not a beta rule.
b) this is for Organized Play. While many clubs and players use the Organized Play suggestions, not all do. But I believe most locations will use the Organized Play rules for all their Matched Play games.

Read the big faq. You can find it in a sticky at the top of the You make the call page. Or in the faqs section of the warhammer community page.

"Rule of 3" is a misnomer. It's merely recommended datasheet restrictions for different point levels of organised play.

Thank you, both. Yes, I am trying to learn all rules but sometimes it's super-confusing to compare them between rulebooks, codex, FAQs and erratas. Definitely, I will check current FAQs once again.

nekooni - your explanation is very helpful.

And 3 detachment limit is also suggestion. Not using the rule of 3 is pretty much equal to agreeing to house rules from now on

Can we please not derail every related topic with that discussion? It's pointless.
