The Valkyries are for my scions, flamer heavy list because I've never had any luck with grenade launchers

Honestly my first real list for 8th so it's mostly just for fun, not expecting anything super competitive

What is the doctrine? With all the flamers and CC it looks like Catachan.

I've fought in this endless hateful war for eight months now, night and day. In that time I've aged a decade. My hair has turned grey, nearly all my squad have died, and I doubt I'll ever smile again. I've fought next to heroes and strangled men in their sleep. But I'm still alive and by the Emperor I plan to stay that way. - Acting-Captain Haines,47th Armageddon Steel Legion

There is a declining return on multiple commissars. I would turn one into a company commander and one into a scion prime. You have space in the Valkyrie for the prime and the rerolls will be invaluable. If nothing else on the company commander a well timed Move Move Move order to take an objective can win you games.

If you drop one Ogyrn you can put them in the Valkyrie against other gunlines as needed. Gives you some extra flexiblity which never hurts.

Because of the Valkyrie having other transport priorities I think you should switch the special weapons squad out for something else-they are too fragile and 8th makes it hard to hide them. Maybe an astropath to deny cover for your scions or give pstchic barrier to the ogryn? Or a priest for the Ogryn?

If you have a scout sentinel available I would always take that over an armored one. I would avoid the heavy flamer on the Basilisk as you should not be allowing enemies that close to it on a regular basis.

Flamers are pretty bad in 8th, I would absolutely swap them ou for plasma everywhere you can. This would be especially true on the Rough Riders as their outflanking puts them out of flamer range.

Good luck.

My advice:

-Your warlord's loadout is illegal. He is taking a power fist, you cannot also give him a blade of conquest because that relic states that it must replace a power sword.

-Vanquishers are hot garbage, easily one of the worst things in the guard codex. A battle cannon is cheaper and does more average wounds against every target profile, switch to another battle cannon russ.

-Flamers are better than grenade launchers, but flamers are a dedicated close range anti-infantry weapon. Keep them on the line infantry squads if you want, but they are useless on the scions because they have to drop in more than 9" away which puts them outside of the flamer's range. Replace the scion's flamers with plasma guns.

-Valkyries are overpriced IMO. They are pretty tough, but their offensive output is lacking. Just deepstrike your scions instead... you are already paying a premium price for a unit that can deepstrike, why do you want to stick them in a transport and nullify one of the best things about them? If you want to do drop troops use veterans. Veterans can also take orders without having to pay a stupid HQ tax.

-No company commanders? They are cheaper than lord commissars and orders are such a good force multiplier. Keep one of the Lord Commissars though.

-Nork isn't necessary, you have nothing important to protect with him. Use his points in other areas.

-You need a few more line infantry squads to absorb charges/shooting.

-Drop the rough riders, they are two wound guardsmen that can't take orders and cost double the points, whose only redeeming virtue (charging) is gimmicky at best. Replace with another sentinel if you really need to fill that fast attack slot.

Generally good advice, my only quibble would be with this. Some Rough Riders are not terrible for innate Outflank and grabbing objectives.

I see your point, but 5 man stormtrooper squads work better for this, just drop them right on the objective. They are troops so they don't eat up a fast attack slot and they have objective secured. Really, rough riders aren't good for much. If they were more similar to DKK death riders I'd like them a lot more.

Also, as I understand it, Valkyries offer the big advantage that dropped units can still operate and don't just sit there with their finger up their nose.

But you make a very good point about rather placing veterans into them instead of stormtroopers.

Which is a shame... always was under the impression Valkyries are THE transport for stormtroopers.
