So for years I've painted with cheap hobby acrylics and Games Workshop shades, but I've decided to finally upgrade to a good paint set like Reaper or Vallejo. What's a good starter set to grab?

If you can nab them and find the set you need those vallejo specific paint sets are nice.

you dont have to invest in a giant box with half the paints never being used.

pick a theme or specific project and try and match most of them.

usually on amazon.

Generally, any of the Vallejo or Reaper paints are pretty good. Thew new Instar line has gotten some good reviews. I would personally avoid Army Painter, but that's a bias from having two colours - both of which are horrible so far (I just picked up two more to verify whether or not I'll consider them).

All of these are $2.67-3.00 a bottle in most places. You'll get plenty of use out of them. I can't recommend any one particular set. With Vallejo you'll be considering two major ranges:

1) Model Colour: this is a subdued line which is more for normal models, historical painting, etc. Nothing crazy in th is line, but a tremendous line of paints.

2) Game Colour: This is the more fantastic range of colours. The quality is the same as Model colour, but the colours are much more fantastical, more in line with some of GW's more vibrant/colourful paints.

Thanks for the mention!

For price we really can’t be beaten and our INSTAR paint got a glowing endorsement from Garfy at Tale of Painters (and he buys our paint now too!) so if that doesn’t tell you how good our paint is, then maybe you should try it for yourself and order some of our smaller sizes

We’re also reworking our postage rates for international customers next week so it becomes much more affordable!

Have you tried our Royal Gold yet?
