I play death guard, not thousand sons so I don't have their codex, but I was wondering if TSons are like deathguard where demons lack the proper keywords so taking them break so your detachments?

Correct. Since the Daemons in Codex: Chaos Daemons don't have the THOUSAND SONS keyword, they can't be taken in the same detachment without losing traits and ObjSec. You need to summon them or put them in their own detachment.

I think that due to "DEATH GUARD" and "THOUSAND SONS" being capitalized in the text that states how you unlock stratagems, it refers to the faction keyword as opposed to the codex. It would appear that in the SM, CSM, and CD books however, "Space Marine", "Chaos Space Marine" , and "Chaos Daemon" refer to detatchments comprised of units in the codex instead of with a given faction keyword, because A) there are no such factions, and B) they are not capilaized.

In the Space Marine codex it gives a definition of what keywords constitute a "Space Marine detachment", so it's still down to keywords in the end.

And of course Chaos Daemons and Chaos Space Marines have similar wordings.
